Russellvile, Al a joke
Star Rating - 1/7/2010
What can I say. Russellville is my hometown. My father started his business here and I continued it and changed it to a completely different business. This town is a joke. Small town politics and good ole' boy thinking. We've had more of our share of preverts even those holding political office. A large number of the population which has only increased about 200 people in 10 years I beleive love the golden tiger(school mascot) a little to much. Our high school campus would put some college campus to shame. All acquired thur grants and paid for by advertising they say but why from council meeting the superindent & teachers or not crying or asking but demanding money, money, money. The city also now broke and seeking to raise taxes. City employees with cell phones, and monogram shirts paid for by the city. Downsize, cut back, trim the fat, things they must not be willing to do. There is nothing for people to do and they travel to the Shoals to shop and eat. Now a wet/dry petition is going around. New Industry with jobs to offer would pump much needed funds into Russellville. The powers that be are more worried about fixing up downtown like the shoals and they need to be worried about all the empty businesses or what I call "Ghost Businesses". Businesses with junk, stored items, that are owned by friend of the good ole' boys and left alone. My father who maintained a business for 38 years would pull his hair out knowing Russellville is almost broke. I started 5 years ago doing contract work for companies outside of Russellville and 3 years ago added internet sales, so I'm not suffering as bad as some here. The economy is hurting all over but Russellville is on the endangered list. If you move here a lot of people will let you cry on their shoulder.

I do not think that Russellville is a joke. I think that we have lost our way and let politicians get the best of us. We vote in people that has been here for so long we need to dust them off some. We need to take back out town, not say its a joke. Yea, I love the Russellville Tigers maybe a little to much, but shouldn't we have pride in our teams.

Our economic situation may be in a slump right now, but it does not make my town a joke. Our educational complex (2 elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, football stadium, baseball & softball field) is something to be proud of. I am not ashamed that our school campus would put some small community colleges to shame. And yes, we love our Golden Tigers. It brings our community together. It brings in out of town people to games for baseball, softball, basketball, football and band competitions. And they eat here, buy gas here and shop here. I do agree that we need more recreational activities, however that does not mean we don't have anything to offer. We have a City Park, City Pool, City Tennis Courts, several Little League Ballparks and just down the road we have the Bear Creek Lakes. I also agree we need to bring in more business and industry to Russellville. And by making our town more pleasing to the eye is a way of doing that. Do you think by bashing the City of Russellville on an open forum is conducive to bringing in fresh businesses, tourists or people looking to re-locate? If your father maintained a business here for 38 years, I don't believe he thought of Russellville as a joke. How about trying to help find a solution instead of being part of the problem? Russellville is a great place and far from being a joke.
