Salem is so cute, it is almost a real American city but it's just too tiny to really count. Even though it's the state capitol of Oregon, everyone knows the real action and policy comes from Portland.
Salem has one of the best climates in the world. Every kind of fresh vegetable and crop grows at some point here. It's one of he most fertile areas of the United States and the best wine in the world comes fmor teh Willamette Valley. Most time you can live year round without having to buy food that's been shipped more than 250 miles. The major companies (mostly) act resposibly and respectfully towards the environment because it's been that way for years. The highest educated workforce and a lot of jobs thanks to an economy stimulated by the state being progressive ahead of the curve.
An hour away, the beaches are ALL open to the public or the mountains are open to skiing. There are public parks, state parks and National parks everywhere. You really can't go wrong in Salem - unless you are trying to afford a house.
