Moving to Santa Fe?

I'm confused. I've compared the cost of living of the Santa Fe area to other cities of comparable size, including suburban New Jersey areas, and I am finding the cost of living to be considerably lower in Santa Fe. Am I missing something? I'm on the California coast and looking on craigslist I find the rentals in Santa Fe to be much cheaper and to require much less in the way of deposits, etc. Are they that bad? They don't look that bad on craigslist.
