Moving to Santa Fe?

Hi everyone,
I'm thinking of moving to Santa Fe in the next few months. I understand that living in the city itself can be pretty expensive, but what about neighborhoods or surrounding towns that would be a little easier on the budget? Is there any sort of public transportation that connects the surrounding towns and suburbs? Which ones are low in crime, et al.? Thanks for all of your help!
