The Real Deal Seattle
Star Rating - 8/24/2012
I approach Seattle from the standpoint of someone who chose to move here rather than being from here. For full disclosure, I was moving back toward the neck of the woods I am from when I met my future husband and of course 13 years later, children, a pug, a home, here I am. I am a real estate broker in Seattle and often work with clients new to the area. I think I tell it like it is: the good, the not so good and all the things in between, including what you will come to appreciate and love about it over time.

Is it gray outside for many months of the year, well of course it is! Is it harder to meet people here than lets say the south; you bet it is but when you do make friends, you make them for life! Are the schools surprisingly spotty...well yes and no depending on where you are. Do I know every nook and cranny, every school, basically the best of the best about what makes Seattle a wonderful place to live...I try to and I make it my business to do just that, all while doing it from the perspective of someone who the city really had to grow on to the point where I now don't know if I could live anywhere else in the United States. Surprising? Well it surprised me that's for sure! I would love to answer any and all of your questions so bring them on!

questions: my family is interracial and we live in the south are we looking at same attitudes? we are working class so we can afford 675 to 1000 and we are willing to start from the bottom is it possible to find something relatively nice and excepts dogs ( 45 lbs)? We dont have children so we like to go out every once in awhile..we like a mixed crowd and music as well..what is the night life like? My husband is an HVAC technician with state certifications and I am a certified fitness instructor. I'm also pursuing a physical therapist aide certification. So does it sound like we have a chance at moving somewhere nice?

My daughter is considering moving from Western New York next year (once she's done with school) and Seattle is one of many cities she was looking at until she saw somewhere that their crime rate is high. According to this website our town is a 3/4 on the 2 crime categories. She started to consider Seattle because it was one of the places that another website said met her criteria for weather along with other cities. I honestly feel she'd like Seattle better than some of the other cities, but the cost of apartments is another scary thing for her. She doesn't see where she could afford an apartment in a safe neighborhood by herself. She will be a middle-high school teacher as her profession. Any suggestions or thoughts you can give me to pass along to her would be helpful.

Danielle, I so appreciate the honesty you show in your post. I am planning a move there this summer with and friend and my 2 grown children and their significant others. All 6 of us want to share a 4 bdrm home/apt in a nice area, close to public transportation. We have 2 dogs so a bit a fenced yard, patio is a must. Can you help us?

I'm planning on moving to Seattle next year. I'm a recent college graduate and the plan is to work and save up for a year and then move. Granted, my location will depend on where I get a job, but I'm thinking work in the downtown area and if at all possible, use public transportation to get to and from work. I'd like to live in a place that is fairly quiet, with parks and dog friendly areas, but with a short (insert public transportation name) ride I can be close to downtown work and nightlife. I've heard Belltown is a little worrisome and Wallingford is pretty okay but a bit of a ways away. Any suggestions/opinions? Also, what do you think about hiring a relator to find an apartment? I plan on having one (and a job) before I move to Seattle from out of state. Is it worth the cost?

I am an African American single woman with two kids. I've read stories of Seattle possibly being unforgiven place for blacks to live in. I love all people and don't see color. What is your honest take on this? Also,is a job in real estate easy to attain and is Seattle a good place to start up a small business?

Hi Danielee, I like your perspective of Seattle. It was so refreshing not to have to ask if you would like a little whine with your cheese. (Hope you have a sense of humor)I'm thinking of relocating to seattle from Phoenix...I know - night & day, however, Seattle is beautiful like my hometown of Hawaii. I would be interested in speaking with you, and if you're still practicing Real Estate, obtain your services. 602-451-6788. terry
