I've lived in Seattle since 1983. It's not for ev

When I came here from California in the early 80's there was a huge recession going on and Californians were very much resented--much more than now. But, I met my husband here, an early Microsoft employee, and we started our own software company. I was young then, and what with the husband, the job, and some very nice friends we had, I did not notice the bad weather much.
But now, things have changed for the worse. I've never been an outdoors person, and so much of life around here is centered around that. I don't like dogs. The fall-winter-spring grayness depresses me. I'm a childless widow, no longer young (59), and retired. I do do some volunteer work, but still it is almost imposible for a single woman of my age to make new friends, especially if you're shy in social situations like I am. I'm not even looking for romance--just plain friends of either sex. The number I have now I could count on one hand. And I'm not dull--I'm a professional artist, Mensa member, healthy, have a youthful attitude, etc.
I think that for younger people Seattle can be great. By the way, the prices of housing units, though still higher than some places, have gone down in this recession. It's much more affordable to live here now.
But for myself, I am going to move to Arizona or back to California in the next few years, as soon as I can sell my house.
I would NOT recommend this as a place to retire, especially if you are single.
