Review of Seattle, Washington

So anyone with a less than spectacular view of Sea

Anyone considering a move to Seattle, please read some of these "Seattle is great" posts and get an idea of what the locals are like.

The person who posted as a life-long resident has probably the most realistic view I've seen from a Seattleite.

Maybe it's the water, maybe it's just part of pioneer culture, but woe unto thee if you criticize this city within earshot of certain locals.

Seattle is not the utopia some locals claim. Ironically, they most likely do not want you here but prefer that you "admire their great city from afar."

The good news about Seattle if you're moving here is, once your (and it's a different time period for everyone it seems) adjustment period is over, then you start to see and enjoy more of the positives, as you've learned to deal with local idiosyncrasies (including personal indignation over any criticism at all -- very defensive, passive aggressive beyond belief, xenophobic, and socially insulated people here).

I lived in Seattle for 8 years (2000 to 2008). I agree with some of what is said in this post. The weather is difficult to get used to especially if you orginally come from a sunny climate. I grew up in Arizona. Its gloomy about 10 months out of the year. Days are very short in the dead of winter. Generally August and Sept are beautiful. The cost of living is very high. We bought a house for 270K in 2001. We are selling it now for close to 500K. Food is expensive, entertainment is really expensive. But the food and entertainment is also first class and there's an incredible variety. the outdoors are spectacular, hiking in the cascades or the olympics, skiing at crystal mtn, mt. rainier, olympic national park, lake chelan. The city itself is beautiful. Before my son was born my wife and i went to a lot of live music. We thought the music scene was great, so many great venues like the crocodile (unfortunately closed recently), the sky church, the sit and spin, the sunset tavern, the tractor, the showbox....music festivals like bumbershoot, the folk-life, travel a little ways to sasquatch... As far as people go, I met many really great people. Our neighbors in ballard were fantastic. We went to parties, we went to dinner, we just talked outside on the sidewalk...I guess we got lucky with where we were living. I met a number of nice people at work. My wife generated a lot of friendships that will last a lifetime. We might have had a different exerience than the typical experience of someone single in seattle. I have heard all of the complaints mentioned in the post from other people...usually single. Oh well ive rambled on enough. one last thing, i commuted to work across the 520 bridge. The traffic was an absolute nightmare. If you can, live within a couple miles of work, it will improve your quality of life immensely.
