Review of Seneca, South Carolina

Move at your own risk
Star Rating - 3/10/2010
If you are looking for a place to die, then Seneca is perfect. You will die of boredom fairly quickly in this podunk town. We moved here in 2006 and I have hated it ever since. There are no nice restuarants, no place to go for entertainment and the only late night place open is Walmart. No variety of shopping places. The natives here do not want change, they love being podunkites and are not very accepting of "others". Their reply to change is: "we don't have no crime here now and we don't wont no change." They will be the first to tell you to "go back whur you done come from." They love calling people damned yankees even if you move here from Georgia. There are some nice people here, but it is rare to find a native who shows you kindness. Taxes are outrageous and don't be surprised if you buy a nice house only to realize you now live next to Ma & Pa Kettle or the Beverly Hillbillies. Walhalla & Westminster are even worse. So pack up your belongings, move on into Seneca and buy your burial plots because you will soon need them.

I see Pam doesn't get out much. Seneca is a small city, but there is definitely a lot to do here. There are several very nice restaurants both in Seneca and in neighboring towns like Clemson, Central, and yes, even Westminster. In Pam's 5 years here, she has obviously never ventured out far enough to find Pixie and Bill's restaurant in Clemson, Red Minnow in Central, or Solé Grill in Seneca. Seneca is situated on the banks of Lake Keowee, and at the base of the blue ridge foothills. There are tremendous outdoor activities, like boating, hiking, bicycling, and many others. Seneca has a large city-sponsored recreation complex, and there are sports teams, frequent running events, Jazz on the Alley every summer, and so much else to do. The only reason I can think of that Pam has not enjoyed living in Seneca is that she's afraid of southerners, who by the way are perfectly friendly, even to New Yorkers like me. It's also clear that Pam has not figured out how to take the homestead tax exemption yet. Bottom Line: Seneca is a friendly and vibrant little city in the perfect location for people who love the outdoors, good food, and affordable living.

Totally agree about the burial plots. Most of the high school graduates leave the area upon graduation because they quickly realize there is no future for them here. The area never recovered from the shut-down of the textile mills from the 1960s-1990s. Many locals left the area when they lost those jobs. No large employers have moved into the county to replace what was lost. There is some manufacturing in the form of BASF, Borg-Waner, etc, but not enough to truly provide for long-term employment for young area residents. If you are looking for stable work, look elsewhere. Far, far away from here.
