Review of Sherrill, New York

great place to raise a family/grow up
Star Rating - 11/19/2009
I grew up in Sherrill. Now I have a family and unfortunately I still do not live there. I am in the process of trying to find a place like it and I am having no luck. I am finding may villages that have some similar aspects but nothing like Sherrill. When I was a kid (and it's still like this today as I go and visit about once a month to see my mother) all I needed was a bike. My friends and I played pick up games constantly down at the park, weather it be football, basketball, tennis... Also there is a YMCA (we used to call it the CAC, I still do as it will always be the CAC to me) with a 12 or 15 lane bowling alley, basketball court and weight room. There's also a great 18 hole golf course that Eddie Niles, Steve Bielicki and I used to sneak on all the time. Al Glover who ran the course would always let us play but always reminded us to let the old guys play through. We would also go down to the crick (creek in other parts of the country) and dive for golf balls. Sit up on the tee box and sell them for .25 cents a piece or 5 for $1.00. Usually paid for lunch at the pro shop. We had a lake to fish in 2 actually, a historical mansion house that we would sneak into all the time and run around the tunnels. There was also a public pool where we all learned to swim, I ended up working there as a life guard for 2 summers. I'll say this. If your looking for excitement and night life you have 1 option. The Marble Hill In, great wings and cold beer, but that's it. So usually when people graduate from school they usually take off and come back to raise their family. It's a very picturesque town with great neighbors and a very low crime rate. It's just far enough from major highways that it's not effected by heavy traffic. The elementary school is in town (k-6) but the middle school and high school are combined of 3 towns, Vernon Verona and Sherrill. Graduating classes are around 200. Phenomonal area to grow up in and raise a family in.
