Suffolk County has a bus system that runs until around 6pm daily. You can get to most important places, but be prepared to walk or ride your bike to the nearest bus stop.
The railroad station provides a minimum schedule to and from Manhattan. It is possible to commute from the Shirley station, but I would recommend traveling to Ronkonkoma, which is about 30 minutes west of here.
Overall, I would say it is best to own a car if you're going to live anywhere in Suffolk County.
