Growing up in the Gorge
Star Rating - 5/3/2009
We moved from Buffalo, NY to Stevenson, WA when I was in 2nd grade. Big Change! Timber used to fuel the economy: people had jobs and the schools were funded with timber money. When I was around 10, some of the mills closed and the schools turned to state money for funding. Schools were not better off when this happened! When I was 18, the community turned to tourism and most of my high school friends work at the local resorts. It's a beautiful place; if you visit, go to Walking Man Brewery (za' best) and check out the Blues, Brews, and BBQ festival in June. Skamania Co. Fair is not worth it for out of town visitors unless you want to see the locals have their high school reunions.
