Review of Vancouver, Washington

Housing
Star Rating - 5/29/2009
Vancouver Washington has very little planned communities. I have seen developments really bad and odd places. Housing is way over priced for what you get. You would think that when you are looking for a home the outdoor space would be important. It is not important in this town, except for homes over $500K+. Even the luxurious homes $1 million+, located near the Columbia River is next to the railroad tracks. Just imagine, having a cocktail party, and the train goes by a breaks all your stemware. Poor city planning, huge meth problem, homeless people everywhere. The best thing about this city are the trees, and the short commute to Portland Oregon.

I don't entirely agree with this viewpoint. I will concede that there are home built near the tracks, as any town is that springs up around the rail line. A large section of Portland has rail tracks going through it. It is a fact of life. Both cities sprung up around ports. On the other hand, there are plenty of nicely priced homes with land. I looked at close to a hundred homes when looking to buy. Many of the homes on the East end of Vancouver and the North ends value yard space. We purchased a home with close to a third of an acre. We have a fruit and veggie garden, a shed, and boarder plantings. We still have room for plenty of play area in the yard and a hundred square foot deck. Our house is typical of our entire neighborhood in size. The only areas I see smaller yards for reasonable homes are the really new developments which cater to the crowd who doesn't want a yard and small sections near downtown. This is the west. Yard space is something most consumers desire. Logic dictates the home builders want to sell their homes, so they will build what the consumer want.
