Review of Walnut Creek, California

Very congested living, good weather, expensive, gr

In 2016, as I write this, I am concerned about the number of large scale apartment/condo buildings being built in Downtown Walnut Creek and the surrounding areas. An explosion of heavy constructuion has engulfed the Downtown area for at least two years now. The amount of housing proposed and in various stages of completion of many large-scale buildings is STAGGERING. With the Walnut Creek downtown area so incredibly crowded NOW, how can this many additional people possibly be accommodated? Will there be room to walk on the sidewalks? Yes, Walnut Creek is beautiful, clean, numerous restaurants and stores but extremely expensive to live here and highest of densities. Weather is good. The last two years were record breakers in heat (as it was in many places on the entire planet in 2014 and 2015), and Walnut Creek was no exception. We had many days in the hundreds and the hot weather lasted through October. By November it's comfortable again and our winters are absolutely lovely, pleasantly warm and frequently sunny by early afternoon onward. It's shorts and T-shirts for many days all through the winter. Walnut Creek is the destination area for fine shops and restaurants and draws people from out East. That's why traffic is so bad anywhere near the weekends. One just can't move around here! Wish I could afford it, that's why I live in the affordable Rossmoor Neighborhood.

I will admit that the number of new apartments/condos going up in the downtown area seems excessive. The parking situation will only get worse; however, Walnut Creek is one of the best places in the San Francisco Bay Area to live. It is one of the most compact/walkable cities in the entire area and the BART station is just a few minutes from downtown. We don't have peons or junkies shooting up and passed along the sidewalk, and no one defecates on the side like in SF. Besides the winter being colder than most of Bay Area, during the rest of the year the climate is usually superior, except for 10-20 days when it exceeds 100F. Most of the bay area, particularly near the bay/ocean is not very warm or comfortable most of the time, with SF being the worst. Except for some periodic property crime, usually related to car break-ins, it is a safe place to live. The property crime seems to be adjacent to freeway exits, particularly in the north, closer to Concord. The cost of living used to be very reasonable, but since 2012 it has gone up a lot. The quality of the people that live here is very good and everyone seems very civilized...a rarity in the Bay Area. I've lived here for most of the past 15 years, but it is not a good place to retire early due to the cost of living...so I'm relocating to Portugal next year to escape the rat race.

If the citizens had passed Prop 5 and allowed seniors and the disabled to take Prop 13 with them to another county outside the SF Bay Area, some of us could live out our lives more financially comfortable, all the talk about caring for people is a lot of B.S.! Rossmoor is a pretty expensive senior community, pretty too!
