We tried to settle in the Walsenburg area and spent much of 2008 in a rural area nearby. With the exception of the decent folks at the feed store, it was an awful experience. The local government is a joke. Inexcusable incompetence at every level.
If you're just driving through do not stop to eat. There is no decent prepared food in town. None. Zero. Worse, the only grocery store, a Safeway, has terrible produce, meat, and bakery sections. Tacquitos at 7-11 are your best bet. If you're feeling brave, stop at Corrines Mexican restaurant for liquid cheese and $1 canned sodas. For more upscale fair try the Iron Horse where it's apparently "management policy" not to serve drinks other than water without ice. Classy!
Customer service, with the exception I noted above, is non existent. Clerks are indifferent at best. I was cussed at by an ancient cashier at the only hardware store in town. My infraction? Walking out of the restroom across a section of floor she had just mopped. Apparently I was supposed to stay in the restroom until it dried.
Nothing is good about Walsenburg. Stay away.
