Review of Gregory, Texas

ah, life in Gregory!
Star Rating - 6/18/2006
I have never lived a day in Gregory TX, but my imagination leads me to the conclusion that any town with such a fine fine name must, in turn, be a fine place to hang your hat. Crime? Only the occasional bad haircut. The climate is breezy and warm most of the year, with gentle cold seasons requiring only your favorite jacket and/or scarf. In other words, never hot enough to melt you down and never cold enough to make your knuckles stiff. Nice! The buildings and most of the houses are all from the early to mid-century era -- you know, when buildings were realized with real building materials like cedar, cypress, poured concrete and masonite. No particle board and Tyvek here. Of course, buildings of such beautiful character tend to imbue a beautiful character in the residents and visitors. Clothing is subtle and always stylish. The cultural fabric is dense, as the majority of the residents feel that a great city with such a great name deserves great art. Fine independantly owned museums, large record and book stores and film rental houses with copies of impossible to find flicks line the streets of your downtown areas. Employment is 50/50 blue and white collar, with the blues taking pride in their crafts and services. The pay is not so high that people become out of touch and pretentious, but high enough that nobody bites their fingernails or has stomach aches. The dining in Gregory is plentiful and patently diverse, the locals eschewing the major chains in favor of mom & pops and cozy late night diners. The vanilla milk shake was invented in Gregory. The overall effect of living here is one of gushing pride. It makes one want to cry out to rest of western civilization -- "what are you doing NOT living here?" Gregory may not be the type of community that would appeal to every demographic, for example, folks hell bent on water sports or leisure activities like shopping or liquor fueled weekend binges, (our bars are some of the most handsome, but glitz and glamour are on short supply), but if you're a sensitive soul with an intense longing for a diverse but subtle landscape that defies one not to feel creative and alive, then Gregory might just be for you. It is simply thrilling to love your hometown so much.
