Spring has it's ups and downs. Pluses include, good traffic, cheap cost of living, friendly people, stable economy and good proximity to shopping, medical and entertainment. Negatives include, Katrina refugees, mediocre school system and poor public transportation. Overall not a bad place to live... in the Winter. Summers there get really hot and muggy, and about every 5 years or so they get a Tropical Storm or Hurricane. For you professional types, Spring offers a fairly easy commute down into Houston via the Hardy Toll Road. There are also Park and Rides in the area if you want to conserve on gas. The area is severely lacking in a good public transportation system, much like most of the cities in Texas. Rent is fairly cheap in Spring $600 for a 1 bedroom apartment to $1200 for a 3 bedroom home. However, be aware of the kind of people living in the community you are scouting. After Katrina, Spring picked up many of the permanent refugees from the storm, and many of the nicer apartments and rental homes went to Section 8 housing literally overnight. Food is fairly cheap, budget about $400 to $500 per month for a family of four. If you go to HEB on Saturday, try to go early in the morning or late in the evening, that grocery store gets packed with customers during the middle of the day. Education for the little ones could use some improvements, don't expect your kids to bring home their text books home every night as the Spring ISD school district is low on funding. Get the ISBN's of your children's text books and buy them off of eBay or at a used school bookstore. Proximity to entertainment is a plus for this area, you have The Woodlands about 15 to 20 minutes up to the North, they often have outdoor concerts during the summer in their Pavilion. Downtown Houston is about a good 45 minute drive, lot's to do down there. Expect to spend 2 hours on the road if you are heading down to the beach in Galveston.
