Hello, i'm thinking about moving to cal city so i can save money to buy a house some place else in my near future. I've read some horrible things about the place but they are pretty old. I wanted to know what it is like living there now (2014). I drove by there yesterday and i was surprised by how new it looked, and the amount of nice houses are out there. There aren't many stores that i saw but the important stuff are there... i like the lake too. At the hour i was there, the city seemed peaceful. reminds me of Atlanta, MI but with more stuff. I just want to know what living there is like. How is crime there? are there a lot of drugs and murder involved? Is there a bad area and a good area or is it all equally safe or unsafe? if so, where is the best place to live in that city? or should i just forget cal city?

Well I know there's not much point in responding to this because I'm sure you either made a choice to move here or move elsewhere by now. My husband and I moved here in 2014 from San Bernardino and we moved here for one reason, we got an enormous house with lots of land and no neighbors for $64,200. We had never been to California City and we bought our house blindly through a realtor. We still lie in Cal City today and are very happy where we live. All of the houses here are pretty much new construction. Many are being built or just recently built and lots of houses built in the 1990's-2000's. The crime is seriously based on where you live within Cal City. I highly suggest for anyone reading this and wanting to move here, make sure you don't move near any of the Section 8 apartments and check with the police department or locals about the area you're considering. At night time it's very quiet in some areas of Cal City including where I live. The street I live on, my somewhat far away neighbors are all home owners and we don't live next to Section 8 apartments or high crime areas. The best place to live in Cal City are the empty areas where there's not many if any neighbors and yes we have plenty of streets here that have just one house and some none. I live near the high school and have no problems with crime. Overall, I highly recommend Cal City but, if you don't have a car you're going to find things very difficult. We only have one post office, one doctor, one pharmacy, Dollar General, Family Dollar, quite a few restaurants and we're getting a Starbucks in the next few months, as well a full grocery store will be opening here also in the next few months called Tropicana. If you don't have a car and need to go anywhere outside of Cal City you have to board the big blue metro bus that heads out of town. It's run on a schedule of every 1 1/2 hours. I ride the bus twice a month and I really enjoy it, never any problems on there that I've dealt with. Also, we have a company called Dial-A-Ride here and it's a small town bus that takes you anywhere in town you want to go. Fee is $1.75 per adult, per trip and $1 for kids. They have discounted rates also if you're a senior or disabled.
