Watch out for Crime and Racism
Star Rating - 8/26/2006
With the population growth and being close to DC we have had an upsurge in crime. My brother-in-law is a county police officer and he told me to act as if I were in New York City at night. In other words be on guard all the time. Very sad we have to live like this. It has caused many of our friends to move farther south in MD. Their is one more thing I must mention~ The black community has increased considerably. I have been here most of my life and this change was weird for me b/c I wasn't sure how they were going to act toward me a caucasion. This is what I have observed over the past 8 years. 30% of the black community are friendly and could care less what color I am. I LOVE IT! However, The other 70% are RUDE, ARROGANT, OBNOXIOUS, and downright mean. It especially comes through their children. If you start up a conversation in a store line they won't let down this wall they've built up, But I will NOT STOP being nice. I have experienced their predjudice toward the white community in the grocery store, the department stores, driving, the bank, restaurants and especially in the Towne Center (shopping center here in Bowie). I feel like an American Indian being forced out of my city because the white man has moved in and hates the red man!! My conclusion is: IF YOU WANT TO "GET ALONG" YOU WILL, If you don't want to; you won't! I wish that 70% wanted to, it would be THE BEST CITY in Maryland, and I would stay.

Oddly enough, I know what you mean. I am black and not from your area. I'm glad that you say that you will still be yourself, "friendly" if that is what you are. I am a Chicago area resident. For some reason I have been guarded all my life. It is not toward a particular people, it may be environment related. I've had a desire to leave this area for years because this guarded feeling won't allow me to be myself. Those walls could be linked to our history as well. I am very sweet but I keep that edge. It's time to let it go, it won't be easy but I can't be happy and move on with my life until I do. For the original author thank you for your honesty, for "going there."

My previous comment rebuttled the last half of the original posting. Know this, crime should not be linked to race. Historically, governments have been known to disinvest in communities schools, policing and development when minorities attempt to make a better way for themselves. There's always a bigger picture to be taken into account.

I think you are confusing that wall that most black people have as being directed towards you. Black people are also guarded around other black people, unfortunately. I think its a protection mechanism that have been developed over the years. I'm black and I have to say that maybe my neutral face expression might look like I'm mean (I don't know why it does), but I'm a really nice person. Hopefully you are not pre-judging people and have actually tried to communicate with someone before you offer such generalizations.
