What is happening to Laurinburg?
Star Rating - 10/27/2007
I left Laurinburg as a young child and I returned as a young adult.
Laurinburg is going on a down hill slide at top rate speed.
For example get into your car and ride down West Blvd. people are walking or riding a bike. Ride down Lee's Mill Rd. you are maybe saying to your self where is that at? Well it is a road that runs right through as people say the wrong side of the tracks. It is a place where teenagers are killed accidentally by a drive-by-shootings. Where you can find a beggar almost on every corner. I will challange you to get in your car and take a ride around Scotland County, make sure you ride down main street and look at all of the businesses that are closed and buildings that are in dire need of restoration. You will see all to soon the poverty, depression, opression, drugs, beggars, bums, low income families, children every where riding bikes and walking with out a parent in sight. Laurinburg is a sad place, now! The joy has been taken and has been replaced with poverty. There are NO jobs and NO money. We own a small business and yes it is located on the so to speak wrong side of the tracks, and our business is struggling because middle class people don't come to that side of town. A few days ago a bullet hit the building where my husband runs his business 4 ft. over his head. That could have been his life, while all he was doing was trying to make a living for his family. It is very sad that you need to wear a bullet proof vest to work now. It is absolutely crazy here. If you can't see it then you are blinded. Something needs to be done before we end up worse than we already are!

What do you think can be done? What do you think should be done? What brought you back? You sound very sad and frightened-a bullet over your husband's head!

I think I know exactly how you feel. I lived on Produce Market Road in Laurinburg for 23 years. My house was shot into at 3am on February 6, 2013. Bullet from an automatic weapon came through a night stand and landed just inches from where I was sleeping. Thank God I lived to tell about it. Your story and my story are just two examples of how awful Laurinburg has become.
