Review of Olympia, Washington

We love Olympia and retired here
Star Rating - 5/13/2021
Having lived all over the world we decided to retire in Olympia and live on the Puget Sound. Yes it rains but the weather can change dramatically in a day with sun and rain. The flora and fauna are magnificent with lush greens from spring to fall. We see orcas several times a year and grow oysters, clams and mussels on our tidelands. We are close to big cities but have a small town feel. We love it here.

It's a few years later. Are you still enjoying it? Considering a move but concerned about the crime stats, etc. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

We moved to Olympia 2 years ago & absolutely love it. We’ve lived around the country in big cities and small towns and Olympia by far is the friendliest. We love going downtown and go to the Farmers Market every Saturday. We moved from a foodie Mecca and was surprised by how many restaurants we enjoy here. We enjoy kayaking in the City limits and great scuba diving spots are an hour away. We have two sets of friends coming this summer to look at property so we are making Olympia not such a well kept secret. Very small town feel. Not a fan of the City Council for a few different reasons. I think the two biggest issues here are affordable housing and the homeless. I’ve been trying to learn a lot more about both of those things. We participate in Zoom City Council meetings which are interesting. In general we find parts of the community very engaged in local issues. We’ve lived on the Eastside and Westside of Olympia and prefer the Westdide. We lived in a development on the Eastside and it wasn’t as friendly. I think the older neighborhoods have a greater sense of community whether they are East or West of downtown. It’s a peaceful and relaxed place to live. So there is my very long two cents.
