Traffic congestion has increased over the past 20 years to the point that it can take several minutes to make a turn onto any street during busy times of the day. At one time driving the back roads could avoid local traffic yet that is no longer the case.
It is also best to not drive certain roads when school lets out because if you end up in back of a school bus parade you;re doomed to spend another 10 minutes or more.
