Review of North Platte, Nebraska

nice town
Star Rating - 1/20/2011
I live in North Platte,Ne..I used to call St.Louis,Mo. my home until crime became so bad.Although the economy is effecting the nation,"there is a lot of work here.North Platte can boast of the "worlds" largest railhead-(Union Pacific). That means a lot of jobs.Jobs that pay well because they are union jobs. Then there is the agriculture that requires a lot of people to work in the mills, farming, etc. The crime rate is very low.It is a good place to raise kids. The schools are very good and there is no forced bussing. It is a sportmans paradise with all types of hunting, fishing, lakes rivers, etc. I always thought of Nebraska as being only a farm state but it is very deverse. This towns population is about 25,000. I am just guessing but I guess it is about 95% white,3% black, the rest being hispanic or asian. But I do not see a lot of prejudice here.In fact it is the other way around.People go out of their way to help each other.I have lived here for 4 years and do not wish to reside anywhere else.So if you want to maybe make a change or need a job,"check this town out.It really is a good place to raise a family or even start one.Lots of pretty ,available girls here!!!!Anyway,Just check it out.......

This is a small town and used to have good rail jobs. But now the railroad is laying people off and have taken a fire them approach to the workers. This place used to get a lot of work back in the Buzzard days the service track was capable of servicing around 100 locomotives a shift. Since then the service track is lucky to do 48 locomotives a shift. As for friendly ya they are friendly people but also everyone knows what everyone else is doing. Don't fart or the guy across town will know about that is if it does not make the nightly news. Prices on food here is owned by 2 companies Walmart and Gary's. So expect the food bill to be higher then normal. We used to drive to Kearney to get our food at a lower price and still had money left over at the end of the month. House taxes are inflated in some cases ok most cases. But compared to where we live now they seem reasonable. I would advise anyone planing to move here to rent first 6 months to 1 year then decide if you want to stay.
