Having lived in Alameda for most of my 30 years, I have seen an increase in vehicle crime - catalytic converters sawed and/or torched off. Massive home and apartments being built to accommodate the bay areas influx of foreign and domestic people. In my opinion, the small-town feel has eroded significantly to the point that we fare no differently than the rest of the towns in the east bay.
The best towns to live in with very low crime rates are in Contra Costa County, located on the other side of the Oakland Hills. Danville, Layfayette, Moraga, Pleasant Hill, etc... to name a few
