Review of Port Clyde, Maine

Port Clyde a trip back in time
Star Rating - 2/20/2010
If you are looking for a true New England fishing village you have found it in Port Clyde. I have been visiting this village since I was a small child. I have commented to friends that it is the only place I know of that used to have a school, a library, a gas station, a 5 and 10, a factory. Progress and misfortune have eliminated all these places, while the village continues to keep it's small village charms. You can feel at ease letting your children play at the park unattended or let them get an ice cream cone at the ice cream shoppe. You can converse with locals at the general store, where you will find the only gas pump for miles. You can grab a bite to eat while sitting on the wharf overlooking the harbor. At the fishermen's coop you can partake of the catch of the day for the freshest fish you could ever want.

Port Clyde is a great place to walk or bike. Although, it does have a couple of killer hills. The harbor, Drift Inn Beach and the Marshall Point Lighthouse and museum are all within walking distance of the village. There are many picturesque spots for the artists and photographers, alike. It is not unusal to see painting easels marking the village. The village and it's resident's have been the subject of many artists' works. Andrew and Jamie Wyeth to name a few. It is the take off point for many taking the ferry to Monhegan Island.

Since the village is on the pennisula, many of the home afford a view of the atlantic or access within close proximity to the ocean. Accomodations can be had at the inns or at the many vacation rentals.

Should you find the need for a shopping spree or a movie, all can be had within a short drive to Rockland.
