Review of Duluth, Minnesota

Duluth, not my favorite.
Star Rating - 3/14/2021
It is the worse weather in the U.S. as far as small cities that large. The houses are fare below par. they are old shingle 1920s vintage generally and not normally well kept up. The people are narrow minded and very suspicious of outsiders and not that willing to accept. Schools seem to be O.K. but probably because they are not diversified like the rest of the country. Entertainment is limited and it seems that the only good place to actually go out and socialize is Grandmother's, by the bridge. I've lived in a dozen states: Minn., Neb., Colo., Calif., Ohio, N.C., S.C., Ga., and Florida. Duluth is the only place where I can say that I was overall very disappointed. The best time of the year is when smelting season is open and you can buy fresh smelt. It even seems that most lakes are fished out and replaced by trillions of mosquitos. It is said that the U.S. ends at Hinkley (75 miles south) and it seems true. Mush that you can get in the lower U.S. is not available up there towards the tundra. The lake is overrated. I find it grey and depressing and not worth buying fishing gear hoping to catch supper. We all have opinions and this is only an opinion. What I like and dislike is just my personal opinion. Many will feel differently.

This review is idiotic. Yes Duluth is cold in the winter. Duh. Fall, summer, and spring are fabulous. Duluth has more miles of hiking trails in the city than any other mid-sized city in the U.S. If you think the only place to go is "Grqndmothers" (it's Grandma's) you havern't made any effort to explore the endless craft breweries and pubs and the really cool restaurants. We have very few mosquitoes within the city because there is little standing water in which they can breed. Do yo want to compare to N.C.? THe lake is amazing, but if you think smelting is an important recreational activity you really are dim!

I was born and raised here. Left in my mid twenties because of the job market. Moved back when I was 40 to be near family - worst decision I ever made! This review is NOT idiotic like another person said. It’s right on! Don’t move here if you like 4 seasons. It’s winter for seven months, then cold and rainy, three weeks of actual summer that you can’t enjoy because of mosquitoes, gnats and flies, a short fall and early winter. Don’t move here if you enjoy gardening. Don’t move here if you have trouble walking on slippery surfaces, or use a chair. This town is not disability-friendly. Don’t move here to retire unless you like being home bound. The mind set is dominated by a redneck, “huntin’, fishin’, snowmobilin’” culture that puts women back in the 50’s. And housing stinks. There are expensive new houses and condos for the docs and lawyers, and shacks for the poor (slumlord heaven) but few houses for the middle class. People try HARD to talk this place up, but you can start all the craft breweries you want; it’s just putting lipstick on a pig. You can talk about winter activities up the wazoo, but they’re only for the young and athletic. This town is really only good for tourists. The epitome of “nice place to visit, wouldn’t want to live there”. If I could move, I would. Nobody has a right to talk smack about Duluth more than me, having lived her for over 50 years.
