Review of Cocoa, Florida

Quaint, adorable. . .

I don't live in Cocoa, but I wish I did. This village is like the set of Pleasantville. The historic downtown area is lined with quaint antique shops, beautiful boutiques, old-fashioned ice-cream parlors, and charming restaurants. The streets are tree-lined; the architecture is restored; and the historic playhouse still offers live performances. At the center of it all is a riverfront park with a bandstand for free outdoor concerts and a launch ramp for boats. The main library nearby is in an ideal location along the river, with a wide expanse of lawn and lots of shady trees--perfect for a leisurely afternoon of reading. A few miles away is Brevard Community College, which is more like a small university. Among the modern buildings on campus are a child development center, a solar energy center, a lifelong learning center, a planetarium and observatory. The commercial district of Cocoa is more rundown, but the homes all along Indian River drive are beautiful. In addition to great weather and proximity to water sports, all the attractions of Orlando are less than an hour away. I could see myself happily living here.

Wow, I am sure you have an ideal view of Cocoa but you don't live in Cocoa that is clear. The crime rate is off the charts. Drugs are as easy as going to the neighbors and if they don't sell they know someone that does. I live in Cocoa and the area that I live (right across from BCC) is mostly non English speaking people and I know for a fact of 2 people on this street alone that are illegals. Cocoa is a very dirty place. Unemployment is at an all time high. IF you can get a job it's minimum wage not matter what degree you have or state certification you might hold. The cost of living here is out of control also. An apartment is range from $600 a month for a one bedroom in a bad neighborhood. That is just the beginning of the problems this town has. We have homeless walking the streets here daily, they are everywhere living in any wooded areas that they can find. There are even communes set up in the woods. Thats right little villages. Its too scary to let your children outside to play because of the crime and the homeless running around. You don't dare go any where and leave a window open in your house. You don't sleep with the windows open. Your view of this area is quite idealistic. Oh and free concerts? There aren't any.

This person must have been smoking a strange pipe. I agree with some other comments that it is mostly white trash types here. The average IQ must be well below average. Very working class. Not many retirees here like the rest of Florida. Lots of pollution from people here enamoured with cheap fragrances in consumer products. Downtown Cocoa (historic Cocoa) is now getting filled with artificial fragrance so badly that I felt choked the last time I was there. Cocoa and Brevard county are wonderful if you need some government aid because the county provides all sorts of it to many citizens. If you aren't on government aid and need cheap housing and a low cost of living, then it could be the place for you. Don't expect to meet people with much thought in their head, though.

We are thinking about moving to Cocoa. What would the daily commute to Kennedy Space Center be like? How much traffic, how long would it take you, etc. Thanks!!!
