Review of Wasco, California

Overview
Star Rating - 3/4/2011
I've lived in Wasco for 2 years. Wasco is generally a pleasant place to live, 30 mi. NW of Bakersfield. Be forwarned about air quality -- second worst in the nation (according to Forbes "10 Most Toxic Cities"). Climate is very mild from Sept. - June. Mid-summer is over 95 degrees most days, with really terrible air pollution from both Bakersfield and crops in nearby fields. Plan on dusting your home frequently, but you can leave windows open year round, except for June, July, August which require air conditioning.

Cost of living is below national average, except for groceries. There is only one semi-large market, SaveMart. Fresh & Easy opened in 2010, but tends to be pretty pricey, although their quality is excellent. Prices are about 1/3 higher than normal. I drive into Bakersfield (22 miles) once a month to do major grocery shopping. There are many Latino markets and restaurants in town, 2 Chinese restaurants, and a couple of "American" (hamburgers, etc.), plus the usual fast-food eateries.

Housing is affordable, but still decreasing in value due to economic crash. Employment is high (14%). Wasco has VERY traditional leadership; seemingly not too interested in attracting new businesses. Shafter, located 8 miles to the south is much more progressive economically, having created an Enterprise Zone to attract international businesses. Wasco relies on farming (the Rose Capitol of the U.S.), almonds, pistachios, grapes, carrots, etc.

Wasco is a very quiet town, good for families and retired people. It has a strong sense of community and generally traditional values. Population is high percentage Latino, which adds to the warmth and diversity. Crime is relatively low, with protection provided by the Kern County Sheriff's Office. The weekly Sheriff's report is mostly filled with alcohol and drug offenses.

Wasco is located about 2 hours from the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Pacific Ocean, so recreation is fairly good.
