Brandon Area - Overwhelmed by Sprawl
Star Rating - 11/16/2006
Brandon was once a nice Tampa area suburb with a rural feel where you could raise a family and have a high quality of life. Now it is overwhelmed by development good and bad - lots of great restaurants and neighborly communities on the outskirts and the bad i.e. the topless/stripper bar next to the home improvement store across from a neighborhood (who is responsible for zoning this place?). The tons congestion due to hundreds of apartment complexes/condos (especially around the Westfield mall area) are worth a mention as is most Tampa (Condo Hell!!) Highway 60/Brandon Blvd./Adamo Drive between Hwy 301 and Valrico Road should be avoided at all costs as it is just a parking lot most times. Overall cost of living went through the roof so expect to pay 300K - 400K for a decent home and let's not talk about property taxes and home insurance...that's if you can get it (thanks to hurricanes and sink holes - yes, holes that open up and swallow your house from below). It is a great place to live if you were smart with your money before the housing boom and already have a home. Definitely not a good place to move and grow now or the future...

We relocated here in the early 80s Brandon was a nice rural bedroom community outside Tampa about 12 miles away development was orderly up until about the 1990s and then succession of housing spurts resulted in high dense population very bad traffic it takes you an hour plus to get from Brandon to the local military base a major employer in the area, it'll take you 45 minutes to get to downtown Tampa where most people work Brandon feels more like North Jersey outside New York City. The Tampa Channelside area is undergoing a Renaissance attracting the Yuppie crowd they are putting in 40 story condos in order to attract the high-income professionals for a higher tax base. north Tampa was a low income mixed community single houses and low income housing with the attendant crime. Due to the desire of Tampa to accomplish gentrification of the once small-town nature they have encouraged the meth heads etc Junkies, Petty criminals and other questionable types to vacate the area thus they have relocated to the Brandon area panhandlers are pretty common and they spend their money on drugs they sleep behind shopping centers in dark areas of the loading docks of many of the major stores. There was some the recent looting in July 2020 along Dale Mabry a major Tampa thoroughfare the effort to arrest individuals seem to be somewhat muted no doubt to political interference seen in major democratic controlled cities. Brandon is not the rural community with an idyllic good life it once was and that's truly a tragic situation. I am making plans to move to the north but still remain in the South a place where you can walk at night and not have to worry about a junkie.
