Review of Edinburg, Texas

NIGHTMARE TOWN.
Star Rating - 6/5/2019
I'll try to start this out by saying something nice.

Edinburg has a very low cost of living. Also, it is centered around UTRGV, a 4-year university with some of the lowest tuition rates in the state. Plus, if you like warm weather, the climate is consistently hot and dry. Personally, I like that kind of weather. But, that's the extent of the positives.

Beyond that, I have nothing nice to say. Anyone who moves here will quickly see beyond the small-town charm and reality will set in. The people living here are some of the most ignorant, nasty, bigoted people you will ever meet. Anyone who is not Hispanic and does not speak Spanish will face discrimination. To put this into perspective, I once applied for a job and, during the interview, I was told point-blank "Sorry, we only hire Hispanics". Yes, this is highly illegal and I went right to the EEOC about this. But that's not the point. The fact that they are willing to commit such blatantly illegal acts to make me feel unwelcome in the community says all I need to know. We're already getting ready to leave this dump once I graduate college. I will not put up with this any longer, and I certainly will not stick around to raise a family in this dystopian nightmare.

Even a trip to the grocery store can be problematic. Drivers are absolutely reckless and have no regard for posted traffic laws nor safety. The traffic can get very third-worldish at times, and the police will do nothing about it. But, God forbid you drive 5mph over the speed limit. Then they will come after you and ticket you for the most frivolous of offenses. But if you want to swerve over white lines, tailgate, not signal, or pass in a median? Maybe even run a smaller car off the road? Yeah, that's totally fine. I have filed so many police reports I have lost track of them all.

Bottom line, just avoid this place. Texas is a neat state with much to offer. But, the southern corridor should be avoided at all costs.
