Review of East Hartford, Connecticut

pretty good melting pot

if I were relocating from a distant state, I would move here. (06118 zip code) housing prices will be depressed for a while due to many foreclosures, but having researched housing prices in MD, VA, and PA, I was surprised to see EH is relatively inexpensive for being relatively close to NY and Boston (2 hours). You can get pretty much anything you want from close by and even though Hartford is not the most entertaining city in the world, they do have concert venues and we are not terribly far from the Indian Casinos Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun (1 hour) which also have quite a bit of entertainment. Beaches on the ocean are also close by (1 hour) and there is also a boat launch onto Connecticut River within 15 minutes of here in Wethersfield to the best of my knowledge. Schools are not all that great, but I believe there are some alternatives. Much of the housing in this area is old Pratt and Whitney houses which are small and have no basement at 1040 sq feet, but 1/4 to 1/2 acre lots are sufficient and a shed in the back to store stuff you would have put in the basement works. Asian, Black, White, Indian all mingle relatively well. Be prepared to shovel some snow in Winter or preferably buy a snow blower to put in your shed. You may get waving between neighbors but not an awful lot of neighborhood socialization, but I don't think door would be slammed in your face if you tried to visit. 3 different routes into Hartford 10 miles away if that is where you work. Taxes are just shy of 4000 yr for your 1040 sq foot house which is probably a bit high compared to home value. We will likely though not definitely be moving south after retirement for slightly warmer winters and maybe a bit more home for a bit less money, but only time will tell
