This is a VERY quiet place to be after the tourists leave after Labor Day.
Then the only exciting thing that happens is the Pumpkin Roll down the Dowling Street hill in October. You can look down the main street and absolutely NOTHING is happening! People used to congregate at Todd's Drugstore until they took the lunch counter out. Now they mostly just go in there to get their prescriptions. There are a couple of other places to get a cup of coffee on the main street. One is the bookstore and then there is Lipka's drugstore on the corner, which still has the old-fashioned soda counter. There aren't any rednecks in this town standing out on their lawns drinking beer and yelling about who they hate. For reasons unknown to me, the local people do not like Asians, and any Asian person residing in this area soon departs for the Grand Rapids area. The locals are very tolerant of African-Americans, but there aren't many living here. On Friday afternoons, the Women in Black gather around the World's Largest Weathervane to protest the current war.
