Review of Connellsville, Pennsylvania

Ghost town......
Star Rating - 2/20/2009
The City of Connellsville,Pennsylvania has been a ghost town for some time. Ever since the steel mills and coal mines shut down there are more empty buildings in town than the ones that are occupied. The only people who live there now are retired, on welfare or disability. Illegal Drugs are really bad in Fayette County and Connellsville is no exception. Most of the landlords are slumlords. The city needs to invest in a few bulldozers and start from one end of town to the other and tear down all the 'eyesores' of empty and disrepair buildings. You can say Connellsville is the poster child of a town that relied on one industry that left== and left the city a wasteland. Anchor Hocking corporation closed down a few years ago {it made glass bottles} It has been sitting empty since. It was the only industry left. Wal Mart moved in a few years ago too and it was the death nail for the mom and pop stores. The Connellsville area is scenic and Fallingwater that was Frank Lloyd Wrights master piece is only 15 miles away in the mountians. Skiing is nearby too. The city it trying to push tourism but with no place to spend your money it will continue to be empty. I grew up in Connellsville but havent lived there in over 20 years. The only reason I go back is because my parents still live there. When they pass away I probably will never return.....

I strongly disagree. Connellsville is a hidden gem. The nature is beautiful and riding on the scenic bike trail is calming and peaceful. The arts are spectacular. The CASD middle and high school perform a outstanding performances year after year.

The man who says he only comes back to visit his parents and would never come back if it wasn' for them.Wow! This guy lives in Greensburgh,20 miles away, not much different than Connellsville 'other than they have more restaurants and their malls are closing down. I would rather live in Connellsville than Greensburg because Greensburg is closer to Pittsburgh with a high crime rate and. the daily drive by shootings and the drug problems are worse in Greensburg.I know people who work in Connellsville and live in Greensburg thinking they're high class, heck you're only 20 miles away.LOL. Maybe Connellsville should quit sending tbeir drinking water over to you? What a joke, maybe you drive a old Mercedes too and think nobody will know it's old?

The city of Connellsville has made great strides in the past years. A new 56 room hotel (Cobblestone) opened in 2017, new restaurants, vacant buildings are seeing new uses and blighted properties are being transformed into event centers and retail shops. The Great Allegheny Passage Bike trail runs right through the downtown, and tourism on the bike trail is up. The Amtrak Station in Connellsville has added a ride on - ride off service allowing bicyclists using the Great Allegheny Passage to roll their bikes on at any stop along the trail. Old mansions are being turned into bed & breakfast overnight stays allowing tourists more options. Highlands Hospital is transforming itself into a state of the art hospital, and just purchased an old school that they are transforming into a branch of the Cleveland Clinic for Autism expanding that program to include upwards of 75 students. The Joseph A. Hardy, Connellsville Airport is in the process of seeking funding to expand its runways, and a new terminal was constructed a few years ago. Connellsville's art scene is growing with new public art projects being created each year. Connellsville has an abundance of "turn of the century" churches. All the churches have seen historic preservation efforts, and now all the church steeples are illuminated at night. Youghiogheny Glass has expanded it's warehouse and sells their stained glass all around the world. It's one of only a few stained glass manufacturers left in the United States. Connellsville still has it's problems, but for a city it's size has seen great progress and continues to grow in a positive direction.
