Review of Okemos, Michigan

Pretty average
Star Rating - 4/26/2021
I’ve lived here for a couple of years now and overall it’s been ok. Okemos, is generally pretty similar to most other small towns in Michigan. However, it’s slightly set apart due to its proximity to Lansing and East Lansing, which means it’s more diverse and there’s a bit more to do here than other close towns such as Holt or Williamstown for example.

Positives:
It’s quiet and safe, of course this’ll vary depending on which neighborhood you’re in, as well as your distance to east lansing, but for the most part it’s pretty mellow.

The school system is pretty good, okemos high school is considered one of the best high schools in Michigan and I’ve met people who’ve moved here just for the schooling system.

There’s a lot of conserved woodsy trails and parks, not really much “hiking” since okemos tends to be flat, but still quite a bit of nature which is nice.

The people are generally friendly (although fairly quiet and reserved)

Now for the negatives:

More expensive than most other places surrounding it

Typical Michigan weather, for some people this may be a pro, but as someone originally from the south I’m not a big fan of the amount of snow and cloudy days we get here.

Boring, to be completely honest there just isn’t a lot to do here. I find that true for the vast majority of small towns in Michigan and Okemos definitely isn’t an exception, even when factoring in Lansing and East Lansing (which aren’t exactly the most exciting places either). That being said, most people coming here are middle aged and looking for a place to raise kids so this is to be expected.
