Dana wrote, " Though this place would be ideal for the use of solar powering everything, there isn’t much of any of that going on at all." IMO, solar on a metropolitan scale is a bad idea (esp. if you think things are already expensive) because land on Oahu is at a premium. In fact, is there even *enough* land to replace the oil-based energy on Oahu?

I agree with most of what you say, except, Hawaii is a Democrat state. Has been for years. They keep reelecting the problem. Hawaii just hasn't caught up with LA and San Fran in poop and needle lined streets. The homeless situations is gaining strength to match LA & SF. It isn't the average mainlander Haole's fault for the crap in Hawaii. It comes from ALL PAST Wash. D.C. administrations. And, yes, the other islands ARE JUST AS BAD. I live on one of the OTHER islands. The whole state of Hawaii is Xenophobic and passive egressive against anyone who dares to move to "THEIR ISLAND." Did you know they have a "Kill Haole Day"? They don't publish it but you can search on it. Almost every thing in Hawaii is "half-assed" done and cost 4 times what it is worth. Yes, Hawaii is dirty, grossly obese, unhealthy, and most everyone walks around sweaty. I don't smoke, but a pack of cigs that used to cost 35 cents, now costs $10.42. They love their pork, sugar water, and alcohol. Last year, Queens Hospital took in $2.9 Billion for "Health Care." So, where did the money really go? (Not for Health care.) We are working on an exit strategy.

Hawaii is VERY Xenophobic about Haoles and anything Mainland, but they love that Haole money and U.S. welfare checks. The Aloha spirit is a BIG lie just to get tourists to come for vacation. Their attitude is: Visit, SPEND, GO HOME. "Don't YOU dare to move to OUR ISLAND; we will make you wish you never came here." Aloha and Mahalo is BS. And, I take issue with Best Places rating system for "Comfort ratings." If you like being extremely HOT and sweaty 24/7/365 then HI is for you. The trade winds is a joke. Try almost GAIL FORCE WINDS that are 15 mph on the low end and 30-35 mph on the high end with wind gust as much as 50 mph. One cannot be in their yard to do any yard work with winds like that. When it rains, it is usually TORRENTIAL. We are talking 10 inch on average. So, the sun is so HOT, it makes most wood homes like like crap even when they are only a few years old. Hawaii's infrastructure is crumbling. HI beach are dirty. Almost everything is Hawaii is done "half-@$$ed" and cost 4 times what it should. Be prepared to live with medicate as their gold standard for excellence. AVOID moving to Hawaii as all costs. The only thing that will not disappoint you is the beautiful scenery.
