Review of Hutchinson, Kansas

Small Town, small views - but big on family

Sorry guys, if you are looking for a well rounded community with lots to do you may want to stear clear of "Hutch" as the locals call it. Religion is still preached in the classrooms, bibles are handed out on the corner. Most of the populas in this area vote republican only because their parents did. Women are to be seen and not heard. However, if you like that kind of environ then you may like the few cultural highlights that we do have. The Cosmosphere is very good and one would expect to see something of it's size in a more forward thinking local. Carey park and golf course are very beautiful if you can stomach the delapidated buildings on south Main and the surrounding homes to get there. Fun Valley Sports Complex to the west of the city brings in cash for our town with softball and baseball tourney's, and and the largest grain elevator to the east is interesting, as well as, the salt mine. A few years ago waterlines needed to be adressed in the downtown area and after the repairs were completed the shady downtown area was replaced with standard concrete slabs. The attempt at qaint lighting failed as they are so close together one of my relatives from KC remarked that it looked like a runway. Don't bother with the mall. Most of our better shops are on Main St (Apron Strings, Smiths Market, Amelia Bedelia's, Unique On B )or the big box stores. 50% or more of the stores at the mall are empty. We have the main fair for fast food but the truly good food can be found at the Airport Steakhouse, Carls Bar on Main, Bumpers Cafe in S. Hutch and Downtown Sampler above the First National Bank on Main. Anchor Inn has been a standard around here for years but it is a little bland for me. As far as our calender: The luminaries in Hyde Park (next to the fairgrounds) in December is very nice. Some homes will have music and caroling. There is usually a hayride and hot choc. We do have a Cinco de Mayo but it seems to have a low turnout each year, Salt Fest (June)and Hutch Fest (June-July) - Fun things to do with the family and actually was one of the main reasons I moved here.

I visited Hutchinson twice in the past year. Seems like a sensible, conservative small town - great place to live if you can make a living there.
