Review of Odessa, Texas

This is the strangest place in the world
Star Rating - 1/6/2012
I got caught in Odessa five years ago. I am hoping to relocate shortly.
Over half of Odessa is a slum, garbage and litter seems to grow out of the ground. This is the only place in the country that I witnessed a woman throw a garbage bag of food trash on her front lawn then walk into her house. I have never seem anyplace in the country that has more sickness and serious illnesses, with the worst hospital I have ever seen. Odessa has a very poor health care system, a poor selection of medical doctors. I personally known numerous people that have gone for minor surgery at the local hospital and unfortunately died. The excuse is always the same, they were allergic to the anesthesia. There is plenty of crime and drugs. The police force can't keep up with the crime. They don't seen to care. The schools are horrible, standards are very low. Texas as a state spends more per student than Odessa or Midland. Texas is rated 49 out of 50 states in education. So if you would enjoy living in a dirty, disease ridden, crime infested, city
hurry down. Odessa and Midland have lots of Oil related jobs, great if you are an oil field worker. The cost of living is low. I hardly this makes up for the problems. There is also nothing to do. No decent restaurants, no cultural events, one movie house for the city.

You aren't whistling Dixie kid! I seriously thought I was losing my mind moving here and thank you for this post. I was shocked by the dog poop, wild dogs (no owners as far as I know) wandering the streets, trash everywhere, tires piled up in every area of the city, nothing to do or anywhere nice to go just run down tough shed style buildings, dirt and bugs. I was raised in the country out in the woods where we keep things clean, we eat well and have manners and respect for our neighbors. Here it is like living in a Mexican dive bar (drunks, out dated Mexican music i.e. grandpa music at a roar 24 hrs a day from truck radios, home radios, and the yelling, fighting and bickering bar fights in the street) Neighbors let their dogs run all over no leash, no fence so they poop everywhere, pee on everything and are aggressive. No mental health here, no medical help here and no prevention programs. Drugs and booze delivery to your house or drive through booze your choice. YES DRIVE THROUGH BOOZE..... who would thinkthat is a good idea? We had a drunk guy wander down our street then stop to pee on the neighbors fence. My boy was taking trash to the dumpster and a guy threw a beer bottle at him as the dude drove past at like 60 mph in a neighborhood. I now know why the murder rate is so high I want to knock a few of them off myself. Oh and don't get me started on how bad the schools are they have no idea what they are doing and treat the kids like they are criminals. The teachers accuse kids of doing wrong all the time but then again they don't know which kid they are talking to or about because they are so disorganized. My kids have been through the wringer at these schools. Not to mention they are racists art the schools and don't want to teach about racism in America or even about people who are not white. I was asking the school about Black history month "we don't do that here" was the response! I am a Choctaw and White woman I know that history repeats itself if we do not learn the errors of the past and Texas wants to hide that and push the Christian school system. I am not a Christian I do not want my kids taught bible stories because they are not history.
