Choosing a Neighborhood in San Diego - 4/13/2011
Cost of living in San Diego, as throughout California, is markedly higher than much of the nation. It is important to note the impact neighborhood has on cost. For instance, in a recent move from Mira Mesa to Carmel Valley, we expected the increased real estate costs, but continue to be amazed at the difference in prices for food, dry cleaning, gasoline, eating out, parking, childcare, and pretty much everything else we tend to buy locally. These increases really add up. We factored in the real estate, but not all the other costs.

A further differentiator has been availability of many items and services. Probably because the real estate costs are higher, fewer consumer businesses such as restaurants and major retail chains open in Carmel Valley. Thus, in addition to paying more, we have fewer choices. AUSTIN COMPARED TO SAN DIEGO....THINK YOU HAVE IT - 3/30/2011
Try living in Southern California. I pay $1650 per month plus utilities for a one bedroom apt. One bedroom condos are $180,000 - $200,000 for 700 square feet. I pay $10,000 per year for healthcare. Next year I'll pay $11,500 per year.

Gas is $4.79/ gallon for 87 grade. It's going up to $5.00/gallon. I have to buy my gas at Costco. I spend about $95 per week on food for one small woman. Food costs have soared sky-high here. Going out for dinner without a coupon is unheard of and not done very often.

Being over 40? Unless you are a size 2 (I'm a six) with big fake boobs, you will not even be looked at. Superficiality galore.

Traffic? You don't know traffic until you live in So. Cal. In LA, it will take you 40 minutes to just get onto the On Ramp; 30 minutes on the On Ramp and then you are on the highway to NO WHERE FAST. Rude drivers?
In LA, they try to kill you or run you off the road, NO MERCY. Public transportation? Carry a Read More

Great Place! - 6/1/2008
I love it here, have been here for 2 years now. It is just too exspensive, you truely get what you pay for in this area. Great community living, friendly neighbors, great commoradery. It is just a bit much for us so we have decided to move somewhere where the cost of living is less and you get more for less. Around here the houses can be big and beautiful just not a lot of land to go with them and we want a nice huge yard for our children to Read More
