This was helpful and touched on a number of areas of interest for me. Can I ask where you are heading?

Don't forget about the 10 year tax abatement that's allowing greedy developers and rich, empty-nesters to build "luxury" on which nobody has to pay real estate tax! This while all of the rest of us are taxed to death with higher mortgages, rents, the highest car insurance and city wage tax in the U.S., the highest TRANSFER tax in the U.S. should you use to buy a home, and it goes on and on. I'm out!

I'm a lifelong Philadelphian and I have to say that the crime is terrible hear right now. The gun-related homicides are out-of-control and our Philly schools stink, unless your children are in a magnet school or a charter school. Many Philadelphia parents choose private or charter schools, including Catholic school when the parents aren't even Catholic. I'm done here and looking for somewhere more affordable, with less crime, with better air and water quality (both are bad), and less crowding. My rescue, senior Pittie and I can't wait! Oh, we do have awesome dogs here! And cats, for the cat lovers! We have plenty of animal rescues to volunteer with or from whom to adopt.

I'm a Northerner and this reviewer doesn't even speak like a Northerner. Move along troll.

Thanks, Samira! I loved this review! I have a rescue pup and plan to acquire another wherever I end up. Do you have any insight on whether it's all families and couples? I'm single and 50+. I have many interests, have a Master's degree and am a healthcare professional.

Why We Nearly Moved Here, But Chose Elsew - 3/25/2021
Samira specifically noted the type of crime mattered to her. You have to look at the data for what types of crimes. More densely populated areas will have car break-ins, petty thefts, etc. What do you don't want are murdered, assaults and rapes.

Samira Davis is just as legit in sharing the reasons she and her partner chose Wilmington, NC as anybody else. The fact that she's a Realtor doesn't mean a think, in my opinion. She spoke from her personal experience, which resonated with me as a Philadelphian, a city that highly values its diversity, and also as my family and circle of friends is diverse. On a side note, I have a Sri Lankan friend who left Philly to go to Atlanta, lived there for years, and is back North, saying that racial intolerance is what brought her back.

re:
Philly has always been my home.

I agree. The rents have outpaced the cost of living and it's no longer affordable, especially if one is single and trying to find an apartment without a roommate. Most of the city has been gentrified or is being gentrified, but that doesn't mean it's safe...just trendy and expensive. One of my least favorite aspects of Philly is the fact that we have the worst city services for winter treatment of the roads. It's downright dangerous, even in Center City, where cars wear grooves into the snow, which melts and freezes, leaving a slick mess to get around in.

Also tired of the small-minded politics and the lack of big change that would allow Philly to really advance. It's disappointing that city government continues to lack innovation. City government also continues to increase real estate taxes (which impacts renters too), instead of eliminating the ridiculous and no longer needed 10 year tax abatement for buyers/builders. The average person in Philly is paying for everything and incredibly overburdened with high taxes and high cost of living, while the wealthy surburbanite, empty nesters and greedy developers get rich on our backs.

Best Up and Coming City on the East Coast - 8/29/2020
Thanks for your review. Do you still feel the same way about your choice? I'm 57, divorced and a clinical social worker in the Philadelphia area. I need to get out of Philadelphia winters and I'd like to be less than 2 hours from the beach. I'd also like access to local water (kayaking) and a smaller town feel (but not super small). I'm still working but hoping to get another job in health insurance, which lets me work from home. I'm also wondering if there's any diversity; though I'm white, I prefer a mix of cultures, people, etc. I'm from Philly, which is very diverse, liberal and tolerant. Thank you.

Hi Michelle. Did you make it to FL? I'm looking for similar location, but would like to foster parent so schools are important to me too. I'm also divorced and looking for other singles to meet. Can no longer bear Philly winters! How did you make out?

Florida's BEST kept secret.....shhhhhh! - 8/24/2019
I'm looking at Florida for relocation. I'm in my 50s, female, divorced and a clinical social worker. I'm looking at schools also as a potential foster parent. Looking for a few things for myself....a good library, somewhere to go dancing occasionally (including salsa dancing), some other singles. Would I be able to find any of these things in Vero Beach? If not, I welcome suggestions. Prefer East Coast for the Atlantic. Not interested in city living...I've done plenty of that in Philadelphia. My goal is to telecommute in insurance and also set up my own private practice as a therapist. Thanks for your feedback! Michelle
