El Cajon, California is a city located in San Diego County. It is the sixth largest city in the county and has a population of approximately 100,000 people. El Cajon has a strong political history, with several local candidates having held office in the past. Some of these include Congressman Duncan Hunter, who represented El Cajon for more than two decades and Assemblyman Randy Voepel who served in the California State Assembly from 2006 to 2010. El Cajon's current Mayor Bill Wells was elected in 2018, and serves as the head of the city council. The council is comprised of four other members, all of whom are elected by their constituents and serve four-year terms. El Cajon's politics are generally considered to be fairly conservative overall, with many issues relating to public safety and economic development at the forefront of recent election cycles. Local community organizations such as El Cajon Citizens United have also pushed for greater civic involvement in political decision making processes.

Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.
