Everett, MA is a city located in Middlesex County that has a population of 43,819 people according to the 2019 estimates. The City of Everett has a Mayor-Council form of government and operates on the Council-Manager form of municipal government. The current mayor is Carlo DeMaria Jr., who was first elected to office in 2011. The Everett City Council consists of nine members – eight Ward Councillors and one at-large Councillor. As such, local political candidates will vary depending upon which ward they are running in, as well as whether they are running for an at-large seat on the council. In addition to mayoral and council races, Everett residents also have the opportunity to vote for state representatives in their district as well as congressional representatives for their district. Overall, politics in Everett are strongly influenced by the large working-class population of the city and those elected often focus on issues concerning economic growth, job creation, public safety initiatives, and increasing access to affordable housing.

Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.
