I think Myrtle Beach ids one of the best places to retire! My mother has lived in Myrtle Beach Golf and Yacht Club for 8 years and just loved it. MBG&Y is a gated community with many events and activities geared toward the retirement community. Especially if you play golf! There are great homes and condo's at wonderful prices. A 10/10 in crime? I grew up in Indianapolis and there was something going on daily with crime. I also have lived in Naples, FL and Holly Springs, NC. Since living here, I have experienced, nor seen, any excessive crime that would make it worse to live here than any other city. We can't stay home and are always out and about. Sure there is crime here, being it's the lowest paid 'big' county in the nation. But there are spots, that for someone with intelligence, could plainly see to avoid. Sadly, we had to sell our condo in Myrtle Beach as quickly as we purchased it because we had no idea the crime there so excessive. My husband and I kept trying to convince ourselves that we were safe in spite of all the stats hitting us in the face shouting--HELLLOOO? We subsequently learned that the police had been called to our area over 1000 times in the previous 2 years and there have been 105 violent crimes right near our community! The police keep insisting that the crime stats were "skewed" and kept blaming it on the tourists who come in and out of the city. We just weren't going to buy that anymore. We have lived in many resort areas---Western Florida, Hawaii, the Jersey Shore,etc. and there was never any such crime problem with or without tourists around. Sorry, but if you're afraid to be in your own home or to park your car in your own lot or leave your house after dark-it's time to say "enough is enough". What more needs to be said when Sperling rates your city a "10" on a crime scale from 1 to 10?[read more...]

Myrtle Beach SC is a very affordable place to live near the beach. If you've always wanted to live near the ocean and enjoy the beach lifestyle without having to pay major money to do so, then Myrtle Beach, SC could be just what your looking for. My wife and I moved to Myrtle Beach SC 4 years ago and we love it, the cost of everything from gas to housing to food is FAR CHEAPER than any other area of the country we have lived in. I too was drawn to Myrtle Beach for it's affordable housing and lack of snow. However if you are struggling as I am then forget it, you won't find a better life here. There are no "Quality" jobs and there is no health care. I've been looking for 6 months and I was reduced to taking a job with a company that offers minimum wage with no health care. On top on that they treat their employees like dirt. People work out in the hot sun for hours and when they do get their ONE break its outside in the heat. There isn't even a refrigerator to store their water or food. Oh sure the company lets them buy over priced unhealthy food provided to them on the premises [while making min. wage] but even that becomes impossible when it gets busy as the lines are long and our breaks are only 30 minutes. They also charge us to wear their uniform and the one that really slays me..they charge us for a cup of ice. As to health care..if you are single, no kids and can't afford health care you are SOL in SC. You are a tax libility and you deserve to die. I have never seen so many toothless people in one place in my life. On the news they call the first 100 days of summer in Myrtle Beach .. the one hundred days of death..this is in tribute to the number of drunk drivers on the road during this time. DON'T go out at night until September. And yes there are "Gentlemen Clubs" and areas known for prostitution. I currently live in affordable housing and I get to listen to the drunks every night. Ahh then there is the traffic.. glorious traffic.. the roads here a awful..no escape from it.. June to September.. lots and lots of traffic. Go south..go way north of Myrtle Beach [to NC at least it's a democratic state and there is hope]but whatever you do don't live in Myrtle Beach!! [read more...]

I have read alot of peoples comments about Myrtle Beach. MOST ARE PUT ON BY OBVIOUSLY IGNORANT PEOPLE. Look you do not move to Myrtle Beach and expect to make 100k, well maybe if you already have money and are opening businesses(like myself). I am an entrereneur from Charlotte, NC. I lived on the fabulous Lake Norman in the town of Cornelius. A very highend area. My partner and I moved to myrtle beach to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you are expecting Miami, you should probably go to Miami! The summers are great here! Great weather. I was swimming in the ocean the 2nd week of November. This winter has been cold everywhere so I do not have enough experience here with winter weather. I live in Market Commons. but I lived of Highway 15 for a couple months which is a little sketch. The crime here is really not bad, unlike charlotte which had a murder the first 13 days of 2009. Cost of living- I live in an upscale area, I only pay about $900 a month, my condo on lake norman, I paid $1800 a month. I am only 1 mile from the water here. The culture- This is the south. Enough said! We love fried foods and meat! I mean MB is a major Vacation town so if you come looking for sheik shopping and world class resturants by emerils go to Miami. If you looking for an affordable place to take a nice family vacation or have dreamed of owning your own small business then maybe Myrtle is for you. Its not Miami, but its not the Jersey shore either, were just somewhere in the middle. Bad Place to live?- Look if you move here and hate it, then move back to whater Jersey slum, Pennslyvania Mountain, or Ohio farm you came from. Simple as that. Dont move here on a wim without doing research about the job market and say the MB sucks,Your just dumb for not figuring out a career arangement before you moved!!! Ther are some bad places to eat, but there are also alot of good places. Brook Green Gardens is a great place for a day date, the state park is great for getting some serenity. So in close, you should research any move you make. During the winter my business dropped 66%, I barely make enough to cover overhead, but during the months of April to October, I make alot of money(COLD HARD CASH)[read more...]

We have been traveling to Myrtle Beach for over 3 years before moving here Feb. 09. We love MB. The cost of living is very inexpensive compared with Jersey. The people are very friendly. We have lived in myrtle beach for 5 years now and each spring, more and more people move to this town and contribute to the decline of the culture and general class level of this quickly declining town. Fake-ness runs rampant and people will use you for anything they can if you have something they want. I have never, in my life, seen such a violating town anywhere in the country. People have no respect or dignity as you can often see people driving around (even with kids in the car) while doing drugs and acting erratically. Low cost of living? Not actually. The cost of living vs wages earned ratio has been unfavorable since 2005. food here is more expensive than in NY where wages are CONSIDERABLY higher. Car tax, school tax Crime is out of control and there are far too little police to control the situation. South Carolina needs to get the payroll for their law enforcement in line with the severity of their job.. $30,000 starting pay is laughable and i'm suprized they can convince any to do the job for that! I made $44,000 to run a retail store! One of my assistant managers (female) was punched in the face while walking on the beach by a homeless man that was looking to go to jail for the night (TRUE STORY!). A city police friend of ours had 138 DUI's in one year..THATS JUST ONE OFFICER! can you imagine..?? Families please stay away! Poeple in the area find it funny to wager on the time in which it will take for marriages and relationships to fall apart from the time you move here. <- true story! no culture, out of control crime, drugs, prostitution, and 15% unemployment (as of march 2009), over populated schools<- some of the worst in the country - lead to a very unstable environment. We urge you to reconsider this place before bringing your family. Girls in college - BUY THE BIGGEST CAN OF MACE YOU CAN FIND. Take a good look around the next time you vacation here! Just wanted to offer a primer as someone who has grown up here and worked on-and-off for the past seven years along the Strand. Understand this: You can always find a job. Whether or not you keep that job once the "season" is over is another matter. When summer rolls around in Myrtle Beach, this place becomes the land of milk and honey for those seeking good pay without actually knowing a lot. For the uneducated with a bit of personality, you'll do just fine here from about March to September. However, once the last motorcycle leaves and the Snowbirds begin rolling in, things quiet down and Myrtle Beach becomes, in essence, a medium-sized low-density town. The economy reflects this, and if you are in any service industry job after December, the weeks following Christmas present a grim picture, as the unemployment office files out of the door and down the sidewalk. Understand: Although the economy here is primarily resort and restaurant, the people working in it also fluctuate constantly. The have a secure place on the Strand, you must have an industry that can survive off of either the local population or on the Snowbirds in the winter...otherwise, you risk not only being layed off for a few months, but the possibility that there won't be a place to return to come the next "season". Also: The jobs, if any, are going to be in Myrtle Beach and along the ocean. However, the price of living makes it necessary to live away from the beach, generally somewhere near Conway or Socastee. Do not try to find work near where you live, because it generally doesn't exist. You might live five miles away from the ocean, but the job market evaporates within two, not counting the major arteries to and from. I read many reviews and often find that those who post their opinions are of one of two extremes, it’s either a wonderful place with wonderful people or the opposite, a terrible place to live. Here is my low down on Myrtle Beach, on the negative side Myrtle Beach lacks a cultured cosmopolitan feel, there are only a handful of nice restaurants and the tourists, like them or not are generally not on America's highest social scale and can be intrusive. It’s geographically isolated by road and larger cities can only be reached by plane or a long car journey. I don't like the risk of hurricanes and I dont like the mass construction of condos everywhere. On the upside the lifestyle is more relaxed and easygoing, people seem less aggravated and more polite, I find the people generally happy and friendly, the climate is seasonal, yet warm enough sometimes to still wear a t-shirt in the wintertime. The beaches offer both the hustle and bustle of the downtown area's, with tourist attractions, bars and attractions etc as well as the quieter retreats to the north and particularly the southern end of what is known as the Grand Strand. Charleston and Wilmington both are within a 2 hour drive and are charming, cultured cities rich in History and southern charm. The airport is excellent, I can be in New York in under 2 hours and even have made it to London, England in Under 12 hours. Shops, although lacking somewhat in designer brands to say nearby Charleston, are good value and the range of activities and sports are pretty broad. If you like Golf, this is the place. I've been living in Myrtle Beach for 5 years, year round the area attracts people who visit, some just for a weekend escape and others know as 'snowbirds' spend the entire winter here to escape the cold and miserable winters in the north. The bottom line is that despite its trashy summer tourists, loud noisy bikers and the obvious lack of a cosmopolitan lifestyle, I live in a place where I know many people would love to live, and more than often they do. I know countless people who have moved here, young and old, and they seem perfectly content to stay here. I like living in a place that people visit, why? Because it’s nicer than where they live!
