The best money-hungry, over popluated, smelliest c - 9/15/2008
I have lived in Phoenix for 10 years and I can honestly say even though I have my jeers AND cheers, I'm not sure if I want to raise a family here. I've found that people either LOVE this city or absolutely despise it. I have lived in many other cities throughout my life and I do not put this one on the top 10. The Phoenix-Metro area is huge...ridiculously huge. You can drive well over 2 hours on freeways alone going 70+ mph and still be within the Phoenix-Metro area. I'm not saying that's a bad thing but the population has doubled since I've moved here and the city can't seem to keep up with explosion of people.
Phoenix is all about quantity and not at ALL about quality. As someone else's review stated, "It's the same stores, restaraunts, and adobe-style houses on every corner." and is what I would consider a "cookie-cutter" city. This is very true especially for all the expansion they're doing to the towns. Everything is the same. If one town builds a marketplace, the

Rude people in Phoenix - 9/15/2008
The people in Phoenix have no respect. Very few people keep their word. If someone agrees to meet you for dinner or lunch, there is about a 25% chance they will actually show up & about 50% chance they will even call to tell you they aren't coming. People who call to buy stuff off an online ad will tell you a time & date they are coming to see or buy the item. 90% of the time they don't show up & don't call. We sent out 75 RSVP's to a party. Only 30 bothered to reply at all (RSVP means reply yes or no, not ignore unless you feel like responding). Of those 30, 20 said they would come to the party. Only 12 actually came & none of the others bothered to call to say they couldn't make it or to apologize. Even if someone is one of your "good friends", you will be lucky if they return an e-mail or a phone call within a week if at all. For some reason people in Pheonix think life is all about them. Hope I can move someplace more friendly

Okay... - 9/12/2008
Phoenix is a nice place to live, with great weather. I have been here almost a year and have yet to run into per say "culture shock". People here are very friendly. However, I have run into some challenges that I thought I researched well. The job market for professionals are few and far in between. Unless you are relocated here...I think you may have a difficult time in the job market. It has been disconcerting thus far and sadly to say...within the next month I will probably be leaving because I have yet to find employment in my field of work. Training and

Enjoy your toxins - 9/10/2008
Phoenix Az is a hot toxic wasteland of blowing dust, particulates, too many people flushing toilets, watering lawns and golf courses and coming to the desert to live in waterfront communities called "The Lakes", or "Riverview" etc. The desert cannot possibly support the vast population and the city looks like a huge shopping mall with "Fred Flinstone" scenery where every corner has the same restaurants and stores, and every street has the same rectangular stucco houses. It's strip malls, no scenery, air pollution, and if people were really aware of the amount of toxins that blow around and swell underground in the water, they'd realize they killed this place and now it's killing us. To say Phoenix, or Scottsdale for that matter is beautiful, is to be totally oblivious to the natural world here, which has been long destroyed. Just ask the wildlife and look up at the

Too Expensive - 8/24/2008
Don't come here unless you are willing to spend. It's really not a place to live. It's more of a RESORT type of living. The prices are very high for everything! You have to pay taxes on apartment rentals and trash, sewer & water. That will bring your rent total way higher per month! Just because they are "building up" don't be fooled.
The salaries are less than half of what the bigger cities pay. So, with the high cost of living in Phoenix, and surrounding areas, the low pay, it's just not right! I made a big mistake leaving NY. But now, I'm forced to look for work outside of Arizona. California may be expensive, but at least you can get a decent paycheck to cover the expense.
Think about this, from learning experience. It's all relative no matter where you go!
Regards.

Do Not Buy a House Here - 8/21/2008
I have to respond to some of the reviews here which are generally too optimistic. The retirees and natives paint a different picture of what's really happening in Phoenix.
Arizona is a right to work state, which means it generally suffers from its employers paying low wages. This wasn't a problem until the past few years when the great migration out of California began and inflated the cost of housing in Arizona to unsustainable levels. Nowadays, the nicer areas of the Metro area are far too expensive to buy in.
I noticed that there's a real lack of focus on education in Phoenix. People lack both common sense and book smarts. In fact, it might be frightening for anyone from the Midwest or especially the East Coast, which tend to have great schools. Instead, people tend to focus on their image, whether it be tattoos or huge wheels on their monster truck/SUV.
I live in a nice area about a block from downtown Scottsdale. What's amazing is that 2

One of the Best places in America - 8/15/2008
First of all don’t listen to the people with all of the broken family stories about how bad Phoenix is. The worst part of Phoenix is the West Valley because it is a lost cause; however the rest of the Metro area is great. The summers are hot here but everywhere has air-conditioning. People need to remember that Arizona is the youngest state in the continental US and therefore is still gathering cultural settings and infrastructure. If you are on a limited budget you can find a niche in Phoenix but if you are mid to upper-class you can really enjoy the city. There are casinos open 24 hours and the mountains to the north are only a 2 hour drive, the temps and the camping are great up there during summer. The location of Phoenix is unique because it is about 5 hours drive to both Los Angeles and Las Vegas. And anyone can tell you that California is a nice place to visit but a bad place to live. The weather outside of summer is addictive and is relaxing. Snow is abundant in the mountains
