Phoenix, the new Los Angeles - 5/26/2007
I was transferred to Phoenix in June of 2004 from CO, it was hot, but the cost of living was a bit lower than the Denver area, and the Winters made it worth putting up with the heat. We bought a home during the very beginning of the housing boom, and thank God for that. Homes have increased in price greatly. During our time here, we have seen grocery prices, housing prices, and everything else go up dramtically. Crime is an issue, there has been a surprising number of murders and violent crimes in the last few years. I have to give credit to the Police Department, they are struggling to prevent crime, but do catch the criminals, usually.
In my opinion, Phoenix has become another Los Angeles. Even the traffic is getting unbearable. It didn't used to be that way.
We sold our home a few months ago for a good profit, are retiring and are relocating to a smaller city. I guess that is what happens when a metro area grows to the 5th largest city in the US. Not for Read More

Phoenix Native for 50years! - 5/22/2007
I'm sorry to say Phoenix has changed since I was born here. And not for the better! They have torn down the deserts all over the valley for concrete suburbs that all look a like. The traffic is horrible! Everyone drives 20miles over the speed limit tailgating you( we are number 1 in tailgating) and road rages! Crime has gotten much worse in the last 10 years. I live in a nice neighborhood in central Phoenix (24thst&Missouri). Random gun shots happen at least once a month. Plus the baseline rappist, the 2recreational shooters, drug dealers, gang bangers, home invasions, and robbers! I'm sorry to say, but Phoenix is now just a big urban jungle. I'm heading to Austin! Don't move here you will probably regret it! Ps. When the weather is ideal from October to April) Phoenix gets about twice as crowed from all the SnowBirds Read More

My wife and I live in a small (pop. around 500ppl) town right outside of Rock Springs Wy. If you want to make money, then this is the state for you, but the quality of life in R.S. sucks. Cost of living is very expensive, not much for culture, and be prepared to loose your spouse. I say that because if you want to make good money then you will most likely be working in the oil fields, and by doing that you've guarenteed living at work and visiting home occasionally. If you are in need of medical attention, might as well pack up and drive to Utah or Colorado. The hospital in town will most likely have you life flighted, so save the money and drive. The wind blows all but two days out of the year. Ok, I think that took care of my frustrations of living here, lets move on...My brother (a dentist) and I decided to start a buisness of our own, which is still in the begining stages. This buisness will be moving us from Wy. to Az., the Phoenix area to be (some what) exact. From my Read More

Phoenix, the Myth - 5/21/2007
Phoenix is hot, dry, expensive, crowded and, with horrible traffic jams and unbridled development. The original western charm of this area was allowed to become paved over by look-alike stucco neighborhoods with the most common feature being large brick walls around each yard. Strip malls, convenience stores, and fast food abound. Poor government at the local level, with no planning authority or vision to do long range land use planning. Not a good place to Read More

Dry Heat - 5/19/2007
Phoenix is HEll on Earth. You hear the locals always talk about the ungodly heat as being dry. Well, I have news for them, an oven is dry heat too but I sure as hell wouldn't want to live in one and that goes for Phoenix as well. I lived there for one awful year and I NEVER would go Read More

Living in Phoenix - 5/18/2007
Lived here for over 10 years and each year I want to leave. Not a native. From the midwest. Have watched it grow and very fast. The things that they are finally bringing have been in several states along time ago, so Phoenix is behind.
Housing -very nice in most areas for the price you pay you get more than larger cities
Culture- Miss all the free concerts in the parks and organized cultural events. Been to lots here not as much fun. Jazz festival same people every year. Sedona on the rocks nice but far away and expensive. Not alot of major people coming to town,
Education- worst school systems I have seen, kids are far behind major cities in most areas
Transportaion - driving is the worst ever-there is not a day that goes by that I do not see minimum two accidents. Finally bringing in rail system. Good idea.
Weather-If you can escape from June thru August..do it. Winters are wonderful. The air quality is worsening as more people come in.Read More

Phoenix.....Hmmmm a balanced view.... - 5/16/2007
I grew up in Phoenix, for that reason I have love for it still. Phoenix is crazy drivers, angry people, crime, air pollution, bad public transportation, sprawling messes of strip malls and abandoned strip malls, golf courses, underpaying jobs, heat, heat and more heat. In short Phoenix seems like a pressure cooker waiting to explode. On the other side Phoenix does have nice weather half of the year, beautiful mountains, great food, many different activities,a multitude of under paying jobs and easy access to the rest of the most beautiful state in the country. People aren't necessarily friendly but they do leave you alone. Like I say, I love Phoenix. Would I move back, If I really had Read More

Phoenix Native - 5/16/2007
I don't know why there are such mixed reviews about Phoenix, I'll give you the real deal from a born and raised phoenician. The obvious, it's HOT in the summer! Up to 115-119 degrees, but when people say it's a dry heat, they're right. You're not going to go running outside in the dead of July. It's definately tollerable, unlike (to me) Chicago, where you're in a continual state of sweat! The weather aside from the summer, is fab! There's a decent amount of culture, it's just not in your face culture like New York, Chicago, or DC for example. My husband and I love finding new little restaurants, and you can in Phoenix, the difference is you have to look for them. We live in the "Central Corridor" about 5-10 miles North of Downtown. This is a great area, treelined streets, and friendly people. The "Valley" aka, the phoenix-suburb area, is very spread out and each area has a distinct feel. East Valley (Mesa, Gilbert, Queen Creek) is a very Mormon area with lots of strip malls and Read More

It's a "dry heat" - 5/12/2007
We bought into that line 15 years ago. Also, "you just need to get acclimated to it", Again 15 yrs later I'm still waiting to get acclimated. Don't get any idea other than it is unbelieveably hot here during the summers which last from May to Read More
