Trapped by the Heat in Phoenix - 8/7/2008
I am a single woman and have lived in the Phoenix area for most of my life, but have traveled around the U.S. To be honest, there isn't much culture and not much to do here, unless you travel to northern Arizona. In general there is a lot of prejudism, close-mindedness and illegal immigration is a real problem. If you are into Southwest or American Indian culture, this is the place for you. If you like anything else, don't look here. There are very few art galleries and the theatre is just so-so. We have mostly chain restaurants, so if you are looking for a culinary experience you will find it challenging. There is desert hill hiking, but you have to be able to handle 100+ temperatures most of the year and the views are obstructed by air pollution. The 100+ temps start in May and last until mid October, so don't kid yourself...it's HOT! Dry heat??? Not during Monsoon season (July-early September)! Don't forget the sunscreen as the UV index is usually very high. Golf is very

Four Years is Enough - 7/29/2008
I moved here 4 years ago and Phoenix definitely isn't what I thought. There is a seemingly huge lack of culture and open-mindedness. The thing that shocked me most when I moved here is the lack of diversity among people. There really isn't that much to do in the area. Of course, you can find things, but you really have to search if you want to do something other than go to the bar. The heat - yes, it is hot. No, it doesn't matter that it is a dry heat. The only difference that makes is that I now have extremely dry skin that no amount of lotion can cure. The summers are exhausting because of the heat and makes it unbearable. The weather the rest of the year is absolutely beautiful though. The air quality and smog are horrible. The school systems are not good and crime is bad (as proven by the 2 serial killers/rapists we have had in the area since I moved here.) Of course, there are a lot of people that absolutely love Phoenix but they are usually native Phoenicians. I have come to

Laveen - 7/7/2008
Life in Laveen is a mixed bag. It's a transforming community - some of it good, some not so much. I like that I live near horse property as well as some shopping. The retail options are improving around here, but it's the same stores opening up and down the Baseline corridor. It's not very far from South Central Phoenix and that brings in some unsavory characters.
All in all, I think as the community continues to develop and the new highway is built making it more accessible, the community will be a nice place to

PLEASE read before you move to this DUMP!!!! - 7/2/2008
I have lived here for (4) miserable long years and wish every day that I could leave this hell hole. I am stuck here because my ex is here with my 5 year old daughter and leaving phoenix would mean leaving my daughter. With that said....
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE listen to all the negative things that people are saying about phoenix. I would guess that the bad outweighs the good 20 to 1. This place SUCKS!!!!! It is overpopulated with illegals, BAD BAD BAD drivers, RUDE people, hot weather, traffic, crime, no direction, and on and on and on. I regret every single day that I am out here and dream of living anywhere besides here. I think Bagdad would be an upgrade from phoenix!!!! I wish someone would have warned me before I moved my family out to this dump and ruined my life. Just please listen to what I am saying. I can go on forever about why NOT to move here and can not think of one single good thing to say about phoenix or the surrounding areas. Heed my warnings and stay

Too hot in the Summer - 7/1/2008
We moved here to get out of the hot humidity of Georgia, and there is absolutely none here. But in the summer time when most of the days are over 110 degrees it's still too hot. The rest of the year Oct - May, it is absolutely great, although it would be nice to have more rain. Oh well, it is a desert after

Love phoenix. - 6/20/2008
I lived in metro Phoenix, on the border of Tempe on VanBuren (& the West Side) and the surrounding towns Cashion, Glendale, and Chandler for alittle over a year. I came back to Nashville, and life here just doesn't compare. I miss the warm weather, the diversity in culture, & the mix of people. Different races there are more open to socializing with each other than they are here. While cost of living there in Phoenix is much higher than Nashville, it's definately worth the money. I fully intend to move back to the Sun Valley

It's not THAT bad - 6/16/2008
Yes, we have heat, crime (5th largest city in U.S. - of course we have crime), illegal aliens (we border Mexico, Duh!), traffic, bad public transportation, high housing costs, ASU (hahaha...), and all the crummy things that come with big cities. HOWEVER, if you want or need to live in a big city, compare Phoenix to the other top 5: 1) NY, can't have your own car, lots of trash, horrible winters, expensive, outrageous crimes, etc. 2) LA, talk about crime?; smog, the prices on EVERYTHING suck, earthquakes, etc.
3) Chicago, old, run down, and crummy winters. Houston, crime, racial tension, humid, low pay rates. (then Phx is 5th), 6) Philly - all the bad wrapped up in a filthy city.
Phoenix is truly the best out of the top 6 largest if you want to live where there are good jobs, decent housing, close to a lot of attractions (San Diego, Vegas, Mexico, skiing in summer & winter), great golfing & shopping, etc. I've lived here for 8 years, my husband was born & raised

Yeah Yeah Yeah - 6/15/2008
Alright, there are a lot of crappy things about Phoenix, the heat, the sprawl, the traffic, etc. But... there are nice things
about Phoenix as well. For example, there are quite a few Trader Joe's around town ( something you appreciate when you don't have one for a while). Also, there is a great University (ASU) especially for graduate level studies and there is a fantastic two year college (Phoenix College).
My husband and I live in the Willow area and we love it. There are old historic homes and cafes and encanto park up the street. It's true Phoenix is not going to give you the perfect city life, you have to carve it out for yourself. You must find the niches where the cool places (smart people) are. They are there, you just have to look.
And I don't care what you say, when November roles around and the rest of the nation is freezing their butts off and you know that you are about to have 5 months of the most perfect weather, somehow all the bad

Quality of life analysis - 6/14/2008
I relocated from the Midwest near 7 years ago...I relocated as is commonly heard for sunny, dry desert climate. I was fatigued with the cold winters and unpredictable weather in the Midwest...It has been an interesting experience living here...Overall, I still cannot move back to a cold winter climate again.
The pros are the sunny, predictable weather (as long as you can tolerate the heat, be aware before relocating here). The pros in the past, as well as now selectively, are also with great real estate investments. There are also an endless amount of great restaurants in the Phoenix Metro. area. and easy road trip destinations available.
There are various challenges or negativities living here. There is not an urban, downtown environment anything like other cities (i.e. Boston, Chicago, San Diego, ect...). It is hard to find, besides technology industry, knowledge economy work here with competitive compensation...It is true, there are lines of
