What BestPlaces Users Say about San Jose

San Jose is the third largest city in California and is considered to be the heart of Silicon Valley. Known for its booming tech industry and diverse population, many people choose to call this city home. However, living in San Jose can also come with a high cost of living and intense traffic. In order to get a better understanding of what it's like to live in this city, I have included a summary of user reviews from bestplaces.net.

User Reviews:

1. From Alice_L: "I've lived in San Jose for over 10 years and I absolutely love it. The weather is unbeatable and there are endless activities and events to keep you entertained. However, housing prices are through the roof and traffic can be a nightmare during rush hour."

2. From JohnDoe45: "I moved to San Jose for work and have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, the job opportunities are great and the city is very diverse. But on the other hand, I struggle with the high cost of living and the lack of affordable housing options."

3. From SarahSmith85: "San Jose is a great place to raise a family. There are top-rated schools and plenty of parks and recreational activities. The only downside is the cost of living, which can be tough for families on a budget."

4. From SiliconValleyGal: "As someone who works in the tech industry, living in San Jose is a dream come true. The job opportunities are endless and the city is constantly evolving. However, the cost of living can be a big barrier for many people, and the traffic can be unbearable at times."

Based on the user reviews, it is clear that San Jose has many positive aspects, such as great weather and job opportunities. However, the high cost of living and traffic are common concerns among residents. Despite these challenges, many people still choose to call San Jose home and enjoy the diverse and vibrant community it offers.

Ridiculously Expensive - 2/15/2015
I have lived many places - Germany, Washington DC, Hawaii, Japan and now San Jose for the last 15 years. We are looking to move next year. Although the climate is wonderful, the cost to live here is the most expensive from all the places I have lived. A 2,000 SF home on a 6500 SF lot, in an good neighborhood will run you about $1.3 million. The house next door to us - 1,900 SF/3 bedroom 2 bath/ 2 car garage - just sold for $1.3 and it is not a nice house at all - termite damage, no air conditioning, outdated appliances - nothing redeeming about the property at all.

Traveling and living in many locations I tend to be outgoing and friendly, but people just aren't friendly here for some reason. Not sure why but so many complain of the same.

The climate is great - I cannot complain about that at all. One of the best in the world. Any anything grows here - as long as there is water that is!  Read More

this is and will never be a melting pot - 9/9/2014

San Jose is roughly 50 per cent Vietnamese and other asian. Thanks to all those assembly jobs that had to be done here in 2000 but are now done in Asia. It does not make a cohesive community. New immigrants are engrossed with getting settled, establishing ties within their nationality and families. After 30 years I now do not know my neighbor, no one will say hi on the street, my favorite market and restaurants are gone with all the finer local stores. It is not a good place to live. Don't ask about driving. Cheating is expected, especially when taking the written driving test.

Used to be called "The Valley of the Heart's Delig - 8/23/2014
Lived here since 1999 but will need to move. If one locked in housing costs by buying years ago, it is not so bad and one might be siting on a gold mine. We're lucky with a great long term rental that hasn't changed in 15 years but otherwise the housing costs could drive us out almost overnight or prevent moving in.

As many have noted, this is close to the ideal climate for most people. It gets hot at times in the summer but we don't have air conditioning - ceiling fans suffice. Winters are my favorite season with only rare frosts - I'd prefer MORE rain. Our backyard is just our outdoor room on our house and I spend a good deal of time there under a large tree. Orchards were the primary crop before industrialization - I have five fruit trees in the modest backyard.

Schools vary greatly and housing costs closely correlate with student scores. Negative indicators are apartment dwellers and Spanish speakers. The schools for my children have been a major Read More

The statistics are out of date on San Jose. We have a majority of Hispanics and a minority of caucasians. Our crime rate the last two years (due to poor governing by the city fathers) has skyrocketed. The priorities of the city council do not favor the needs of the city and we're seeing the effects of poor management in the degeneration of our infrastructure, parks, police and fire services. The parks are disgusting! There's mass corruption in the governing body to the extent that some county and city officials are serving jail time. This is 2014. The character of the city is being replaced with plastic imitations of culture and housing. It's also getting very Read More

Best of both worlds - Proximity to Natural Playgro - 6/24/2013
San Jose is one of the few places that offer a dozen weekend getaways within 1-3 hours that range from world class museums, hiking & biking state parks, visiting national parks, and gorgeous beaches. On a Saturday, you can drive to Santa Cruz beaches in the morning and by late afternoon be in Yosemite. Read More

San Francisco Bay Area Climate - 6/18/2013
The temperate climate is what attracts people to the Bay Area. I've lived here for more than 60 years. I am about 50 miles from San Francisco bay. The marine layer keeps the entire Bay Area very cool, even during summer months. I have never required home air conditioning because the home is well insulated and never goes above 84 degrees indoors when the outside temperature is more than 95 degrees. In the evening when the fog is over the bay the cold air cools nearby counties. On rare occasions that cooling marine layer is absent, and that leads to noticeably hotter weather. But those days are Read More
