What BestPlaces Users Say about San Jose

San Jose is the third largest city in California and is considered to be the heart of Silicon Valley. Known for its booming tech industry and diverse population, many people choose to call this city home. However, living in San Jose can also come with a high cost of living and intense traffic. In order to get a better understanding of what it's like to live in this city, I have included a summary of user reviews from bestplaces.net.

User Reviews:

1. From Alice_L: "I've lived in San Jose for over 10 years and I absolutely love it. The weather is unbeatable and there are endless activities and events to keep you entertained. However, housing prices are through the roof and traffic can be a nightmare during rush hour."

2. From JohnDoe45: "I moved to San Jose for work and have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, the job opportunities are great and the city is very diverse. But on the other hand, I struggle with the high cost of living and the lack of affordable housing options."

3. From SarahSmith85: "San Jose is a great place to raise a family. There are top-rated schools and plenty of parks and recreational activities. The only downside is the cost of living, which can be tough for families on a budget."

4. From SiliconValleyGal: "As someone who works in the tech industry, living in San Jose is a dream come true. The job opportunities are endless and the city is constantly evolving. However, the cost of living can be a big barrier for many people, and the traffic can be unbearable at times."

Based on the user reviews, it is clear that San Jose has many positive aspects, such as great weather and job opportunities. However, the high cost of living and traffic are common concerns among residents. Despite these challenges, many people still choose to call San Jose home and enjoy the diverse and vibrant community it offers.

If you don't work in High Tech don't bother - 3/8/2007
I have lived in the Bay Area now for fifteen years and have finally decided to pack it in. My husband and I are both educated professionals, but do not have careers in high tech. Other industries can't keep the salaries up with high tech and it makes it nearly impossible to make ends meet - especially with kids. Unless you have a family income of AT LEAST 140,000 - don't Read More

San Jose Sucks! - 2/24/2007
Lived in San Jose in the 90's thru to 2006. No jobs for High tech. Corporate America sold out its people. High cost of real estate. Gas prices (CA is being punished). Organized government corruption to the max. You have to be a foreigner to want to buy a shack for $800K. Your basically working/slaving for your home. Commodity prices are adjusted as though everyones a millionaire. The ones that are suffering are the people who aqcuired their homes through inheiritance, taking advantage of Prop 13. Prop 13 will eventually be lost due to deminishing support and California's outragious budget problems. You still can't skirt around the fact that prices are set as though everyones a millionaire. I moved out of San Jose with a mindset of "why stay". California is a beautiful state and will always be its just the people screwed it up. If you don't mind smaller government, cheaper housing, and can comunicate in English, areas outside Calif. can make a big difference in the quality of Read More

casual comfortable and costly - 1/2/2007
We moved here 5 years ago from San Francisco and were both pleasantly and unpleasantly surprised. Perfect climate but power and water companies overcharge. Traffic much worse in other bay area locations. Any attire acceptable anywhere including mall teen girls in pajamas & slippers. Hispanic numbers have increased greatly and no longer make an effort to speak English. My favorite waiter suddenly reverted to Spanish speaking. Very safe streets and alert cops. Spectacular countyside on back roads from Almaden Valley south to Gilroy. 40 minutes to the Pacific ocean and Santa Cruz or Read More

Housing is outrageous but nice place to live - 12/9/2006
If you like city living and can afford to live here, San Jose is nice. It's a big city though so you have to find the right neighborhood. Family friendly places are Willow Glen, Rose Garden, Evergreen and Cambrian. WG is best in my opinion--quasi historial downtown, lots of kids, families and dogs. There is a lot to do indoors (tech museum, children's museum, Museum of Modern Art, movies, theaters, convention shows, and more) and out (lots of day hikes, community markets, farmer's markets, 40 min to beach (w/o traffic), small downtown areas for window shopping and street side cafes and coffee). Weather is mostly great. Wet winters and hotter summer. Housing and cost of living are outrageous though, and schools are not great. We are looking for a different place to Read More

There is no justification for living in SAN JOSE! - 9/22/2006
I live just south of San Jose in Monterey. I spent two hours yesterday driving through ghetto after ghetto all throughout the city of San Jose. Downtown consisted of many thugs and homeless people and the streets are very dark even during the day. Honestly, I didn't see one tech looking person while I was there, mostly just latinos whom seemed to overtake a once nice city.
The reason I went ot San Jose is to take an exam at Evergreen college. The lady who proctored me said that enrollment is down to an all time low and that the tech/job industry in San Jose is FLAT.
The reason I had to stay 4 hours in San Jose after my test is because TRAFFIC is STOPPED till 9pm. People spend a large percentage of their existance stuck in nonstop traffic for hours, luckily I knew not to wait in traffic and decided to explore the neighborhoods looking for somewhere to hang out until the traffic was gone.

If the freeways were parking lots. . . - 9/19/2006
then, the city would be rich! Traffic in the Bay Area is horrible. Wonder if underground transportation system like that of Japan would take off here!

The food however, is wonderful. So much variety!

The people. . .there's so much to learn. It's like you've traveled the world - that is if you're willing to open your heart to the cultures surrounding you.

Great City - 8/10/2006
I love San Jose. The downtown area's not as big as I would like, but the culture is vivid -- lots of great food and arts and festivals. The city government is great, with excellent police force, utilities, waste management. The downtown area is exceptionally clean for such a large city. It's not hard to find work. Nightlife is exciting and fun (though there needs to be a little more variety -- I hope you luke pubs or clubs, because that's about all that's here: only one sports bar and two pool halls in the downtown area).

The one big problem with San Jose: Cost. Living downtown is expensive. Most of the dot-com survivors and moneymakers live in the blossom valley area where housing's a little more affordable, but since they don't usually come downtown for their partying and fun, the "walkability" of downtown is pretty low (there's not a lot to do if you park your car and just walk around).

That said, I love it here. Moving away (for a new position) is going Read More
