THE SECRET ISLAND OF FLORIDA - 10/14/2021
We traveled the entire east and west coasts of Florida and the entire east coast of Georgia. We LOVED St. Marys GA. but decided on Amelia Island... Mainly because AI has amazing beaches...Basically all beach. The people are great, the climate is amazing. Nights are actually warmer than Orlando due to the Ocean effect. It may get below 32 degrees (on the Island) once in a decade. I can grow almost anything from Citrus to Any Palm and Banana, The ocean breeze keeps us "cooler" than most areas in the summer. the negative is the extremely high cost to live here. From utilities, food, but most of all housing and property taxes. Housing cost are extremely high. and property taxes are some of the highest in Florida. The high taxes are because Amelia Island residents want to Island to look beautiful. that costs dollars. On the main land Yulee is developing quickly, and housing is higher that other areas of Florida. It a Southern culture, which means people are Happy and friendly. We Read More

Paradise in Florida - 1/1/2020
There is no place in Florida like Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach. The beach is beautiful.. But, best of all are the people. Real Southern hospitality... Southern charm and perfect weather. Most visitors here are from the South and Mid-West, which is Read More

good place - 8/23/2014
Came back to Fernandina after a long hiatus. Fernandina has always been a magical place, but many things are getting better. The restaurant scene has improved tremendously--Jack and Diane's on Centre street is an absolute must-visit. More shopping just off-island, while strict restrictions keep the island itself unspoiled. Relatively low cost for homes within a short walk to the beach, and way more amenities than similar sized towns. F.B. isn't perfect, but it's got to be the best-kept secret in Read More

More diverse than youl'd think - 6/3/2011
I lived in Fernandia Beach for 4 years, and I would have to disagree with the person who said that F.B. is all conservative and that liberals don't thrive. Yes, there is a large group of very conservative people. But there is also a sizeable minority of moderate and liberal people, much more so than in the rest of north florida. No matter what your political persuasion, you can find congenial people here. Try the theater community, the art league or the local U.U. group if your beliefs are on the moderate-to-left end of the spectrum. Fernandina attracts people from all over, so it has a more more diverse mix of opinions--which makes for a livelier and more vibrant culture. Most of the people I met there wound up in Fernandina by accident. They were passing through on vacation and fell in love, and they came from all over. I found it easier to make friends there than in any other place I've lived.

My job took me elsewhere, but I would recommend F.B. as a great Read More

I think the air quality is poor in fernandina beach.. A beautiful island butt stinky, especially in the Historic downtown area.  Read More

Fernandina Beach from my perspective - 8/29/2010
I have lived in Fernandina Beach for 19 years. I would never call this place heaven by any stretch of the imagination, though some people would.
Pros: You have a beach and lots of sand and lots of water and marsh...if this is your thing then yes you would like it here.
Cons: Schools are very bad. The weather is too hot and sticky from June through October. It is not a very young thinking community "overrun by rich retirees" and kids have nothing really to do unless you surf, and that is not that good here either.
If I had to do it all over again I would never move Read More

Ilsand life - 4/8/2010
Nice beautiful sandy beaches, little quaint downtown with tons of restaurants and little shops, yet, in this island the size of Manhattan, within the city limit the building code limits building to 36’ height and doesn’t allow consolidating lots to build mondo-properties . . .bye bye promoters and the fear of ending up in Palm beach like sterile town or overcrowded Hilton Head Island.

Yeah, we have two peppermill on the island, but the way they are placed the smoke goes off the island, and the regulation on pollution makes them of no-concern whatsoever, to the point where the Fort Clinch park a couple of miles from it is a Gold Medal Park winner and that we have our own bird sanctuary on the island.

We have a greenway that stretches in the middle of the island, and it is also a place where you can drive on the beach in some area. Two little community theaters, perfect weather and 35mph speed limit on most of the island.

On top of this! A true Read More

fantastic place - 5/5/2007
I suspect that the previous post was written by someone who secretly loves the place and wants to keep others out. Fernandina is the only town on Amelia Island, an absolutely gorgeous place with wonderful nature preserves, sparkling beaches, and a charming historical district. The paper mill smell is only noticeable once and a while -nothing like the huge paper mills in Georgia. It is not in any way a signifigant factor in the quality of life. There is a great deal to do for a small town, with lots of art galleries, two amateur theatres, and a great museum, as well as dozens of charming shops. The people are the friendliest I've ever met. As a transplant from big city, I sometimes miss the urban vibe, but am surprised at how much this area has to Read More
