Not what it used to be - 3/1/2006
Fort Lauderdale has been flooded with transplants from all over the country. I can't say I blame them for wanting to move here with the great weather and the ocean at your doorstep. How ever it has changed the quality of life here and in my opinion not for the better. The traffic is terrible, my favorite restaurant now has a 1 hour waiting list and it seem that people are getting very pushy. The cost of real estate has now reached new highs and I don't think the average person can move here anymore at these prices. That's too bad

Fort Lauderdale Arts - 2/28/2006
The city has a good variety of cultural outlets. While not as ingrained as you might expect in other parts of the United States, there are outlets. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts hosts touring companies of Broadway Shows and many local groups like the Miami Ballet. Broward County maintains a cultural commission to promote the Arts and has a regular exhibit space for young artists called Artserve. The Broward County Library at 38 branches is the largest system in the state of Florida. It sponsors arts and other programs all year long. What Fort Lauderdale doesn't have is any appreciation for classical music. The philarmonic disbanded and the last radio station changed formats. South Florida is probably the only metropolitan area in the country without a classical radio

Housing Market off the Charts - 10/4/2005
Unless your very well off better check out the real estate market before relocating. Most rentals are being condo converted and sold at an overinflated cost so that market is tight as well. We are Hurricane Alley in the Summer so if you don't like the weekly forecast suspense this area is not for the faint of heart especially if you are a home owner. Taxes rising, Insurance Rising if you can find it, better have a very good job and be bilingual before relocating. Traffic is a log jam in the Broward County area and if you commute to Miami forget about it!! BTW NEED A CAR TO GET AROUND. Stats on cost of living are higher than depicted on here.
I love the weather but only in the winter months. Summers are hot and rainy, lots of nightlife and things to do if you are in the air conditioning. However people don't generally know there neighbors here as transient lifestyle. There are many wonderful tourist areas but unfortunately Ft Lauderdale is for tourist. Those that live
