Life in Naples - 10/7/2008
I agree with the others that the weather is fantastic in Naples, and they have very lovely beaches. With an average age of 62, it can get a little boring here. My experience with many elderly people in the past has always been that they are a friendly, kind population. Naples is strange in that the older population (in general) is snobby - we can't figure why. We suppose that most here are mid-westerners who are uneducated, sold the farm, and feel that they hit the big time buying a house in Florida, living on the golf course. Have never experienced this culture before. I agree with the comments about Marco Island. It is a very appealing place, and the people are younger and much friendlier. We haven't been to a decent restaurant yet after 3 months visiting. The comments about the bad restaurants have proven Read More

Love It - 8/19/2008
Ok we've been here 4 months through the summer and love it. We have family in Ft. Myers to the north and have visited both in summer and winter and understand the traffic headaches. We moved from Las Vegas so even winter traffic here is NOTHING compared to Vegas ALL YEAR round.

August of 2008, this is the time to find your affordable home close to the beach. We are not rich ourselves and have managed a 1500 sq/ft house 4 miles from the beach in a golfing community no less.

So those who cannot find affordable homes now aren't looking or are having a tough time getting the loan, but the homes ARE here.

Naples Ho Hum - 4/22/2008
Naples is a great place to retire, but can be a tough place to work. It's okay until "Season" when hordes of snowbirds clog the highways and byways. It's much better to live close to the beach, as that is the most fun. The suburbs may look good but being mostly bedroom communities they can be boring and isolating, especially in Season, when a 15 minute drive to the beach becomes 45 minutes. Also, it can be a dull town, not much live music and lites going out at 9 PM. The bars aren't very exciting, and the average age seems like 65. But the beaches are great, and if you don't have to work for a living; you'll probably love Read More

Meth problem is alive and well in Naples - 12/3/2007
I lived in Naples for 4 years. It does have a very picturesque downtown, beautiful beaches, but it is a Tale of 3 Cities: the haves, the wannabes and the havenots. The haves live in the million dollar mansions, the wannabes are all old retirees who like to think that living in a rich area or playing golf somehow gives them status, and the havenots mostly into drugs - crystal meth is everywhere in this town and though the police are vigilant its everywhere. The wannabes make up housing association rules to make life homogenous and as boring as themselves. If you have dogs - forget it - they are not well tolerated. So, not a great place to live unless u are insulated by Read More

80 is the Magic Number in Naples - 8/9/2007
If you are 80 years old, have 80 million dollars, love to be in 80 degree weather with 80 percent humidity, and shoot an average of 80 on the golf course, then head on down I-75 to beautiful Naples, Florida.

Here, you will be in your own little world of overpriced restaurants, real estate and shoppes.

Drape yourself in tacky clothes, place your teacup Yorkie under your arm, then go for a stroll down Fifth Avenue with your nose high up in the air. Just be sure to look down once in a while, so your Christian Louboutin shoes don't end up in poo courtesy of someone else's precious little doggie.

Overbuilt and traffic is a nightmare - 5/31/2007
There is so much overbuilding and the rush hour traffic is a nightmare, even out of season. And in season, all the retired snowbirds are on the roads during rush hour, so they can go to the early bird specials. There are very few access roads because of all the gated communities. All of the traffic is funneled onto just a few main roads. And all of the main roads are under construction, so lanes are closed etc. Very soon this place is going to look like Hialeah.
