Overall, it seems that Chicago offers a dynamic and exciting lifestyle, but it also has its challenges. The diverse culture and endless entertainment options are praised by many, but the high cost of living and potential safety concerns are valid points to consider. Awesome place for cultural things to do - 6/17/2013
I have lived in several places in Chicago and love it. I love all the street festivals that you can go to during the summer months and the abundance of etnic restaurants is amazing it is the true melting pot. There is crime but as long as you look like you belong people will leave you alone. Great area for singles as there is so much to do from ball games to clubs to parades and the ever popular Taste of Chicago. Would not live anywhere Read More

Chicago not for the outdoor enthusiast - 4/12/2013
I have lived in Chicago my whole life. I am starting my research to move to another state for two main reasons... 1) the climate here is the absolute worst and 2) the cost of living is horrendous.

If you like to be outdoors, Chicago is not the place for you. For 7 months a year, its freezing, windy, snowing and raining. The summer is so hot and muggy that you feel tired after being outside for 5 minutes. The only good month is October. If you love nature and like to be outside hiking, biking, swimming, etc., there is nothing here. No mountains, no forests, and the lake is freezing and really not swimmer friendly. There are a few lakes... So, i'm doing my research to find a better place to live. Read More

The old grey goose ain't what she used to be... - 3/31/2013
I've lived in Chicago all my life. I'm 53 years old. I grew up and was educated here. There was a saying when I was growing up that if you couldn't make it in Chicago, you couldn't make it any where. Well, you cannot say that now. Chicago has changed from a blue to a white collar town. If you are not making at least $100K, all you will be doing is existing. The costs of living has gone through the roof. Rents in decent areas are insance (you're going to need at least two or more roomates and good luck fitting them all into 650 sq. ft.). Crime has gone through the roof and is out of control. You're nickeled and dimed by the City on everything from parking fees, entertainment taxes, food tax, property taxes and any other tax that they can get away with. It has experienced negative population growth because it can no longer be comfortably afforded by the middler working class. The city is no place to raise children because of crime. You even have to watch your back going out in Read More

High crime, really horrible winters,high obesity r - 1/28/2013
Just not for me. I have met some very wonderful people, but in general not the nicest city...and I've lived in several. This is the only city where men have flipped me off or yelled, f--- you out their car window b/c I'm not driving as fast as they want me to(and I always drive at least 5 mph over the speed limit). The skyline is pretty under the setting sun, and there are some nice parks, but this is the most aggressive city I have ever lived in. And the winters are brutal. Cost of living is extremely high. Really consider your lifestyle and what you want before moving here. Read More

Tons of Culture! - 11/26/2012
I have live in Chicago all of my life, and I have to say that in terms of cultural and social options, it ranks in the top 5 cities in the U.S. The night life, fine dining, museums, and of course Lake Michigan give you endless options each and every weekend! Chicago's lakefront and skyline is second to no other city on earth.
The cons? Well, there are a few. The cost of living in or near downtown Chicago..gas, food, shopping, rentals, property taxes (and I wont even get into parking!!)...will cost you an arm and a leg. Crime in some parts of the city is pretty bad. It really boils down your income. Many people chose to live in the suburbs, but most of the jobs are downtown. The city school system is sub par compared to many suburban systems.
If you make more than $100K a year, you can live comfortably some areas south and west of downtown. Read More
